OECD puts Switzerland on list of tax havens (DPA)

12 March 2009

PARIS - The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has drawn up a new list of uncooperative tax havens made up of about 30 countries, including Switzerland, the online edition of the French daily Le Figaro reported on Thursday.

The list, described by the OECD as a ‘working paper,’ has been sent on to London to be used as a basis for possible measures to be taken against these tax havens by the G20 group of nations, which will be meeting there on April.

The OECD prepared the list at the request of the French and German governments, who have demanded that the issue become a major talking point at the G20 summit.

Other offshore tax havens on the list include Luxembourg, Austria, Hong Kong and Singapore, Le Figaro reported.

Nations on the list ‘are those who do not furnish banking information to tax authorities of other countries within the framework of income tax evasion,’ the OECD said.

Who and what is the OECD and why do they assume to have any importance? Are they just another group with initials?

Nations on the list ‘are those who do not furnish banking information to tax authorities of other countries within the framework of income tax evasion,’ the OECD said.

As the Swiss have repeatedly stated - this is due to the fact that, in most countries, tax evasion is so loosley defined that any honest mistake on a tax filing could be defined as evasion. In Switzerland such "mistakes" are handled at the State Level and treated as misdemeanors.

Tax FRAUD, OTOH, is a Federal Crime and involves the deliberate deception. In cases of Tax FRAUD - Swiss Bank Secrecy Laws do not apply and the Government provides assitance to other countries in these matters.

Of course, countries that impose draconian tax burdens upon thier citizens, do not want to hear this. It would mean they actually would have to have a CASE against the accussed - and we can't have that now, can we?

But not for much longer if the leftards have thier way. Especially in light of the events in Germany yesterday, we already have renewed calls for stricter gun laws - the removal of militia weapons from the home (yes, the melitia exists here) and the outlawing of 1st person shooter games (and likely most MMORPG's)

I agree. I love the way that a relatively minor country like Switzerland, or a really tiny country or territory, like the Pacific Island states or whatever, they have a powerful underdog role in influencing tax policy everywhere. Because as capital gets more and more fluid, its harder and harder for nations to enforce their tax laws. So a place like the Caymans, even if they don’t have flush toliets, puts pressure on the U.S. to reduce taxes. It’s awesome; you gotta root for the little guy here.
