Look, if Thompson got the nomination in 2012 or whenever, I’d vote for him more willingly than I voted for McCain. But I think that the last few decades have made it very necessary for conservatives to set the bar higher for republican candidates. If you’re hoping to be the winning GOP presidential candidate, you need to have not only a conservative record to run on, you also have to demonstrate that you will be ruthless in defending those values if that’s what’s required. And that is what is required. The office of the presidency shouldn’t be a “trophy” to win for the guy with the right stuff. It should be the sh****est job in the world, or else you’re not doing your job. Unfortunately, it’s a thankless job as well unless you’re a hustler like Obama or Clinton.
