London Spectator: Petraeus planning 2010 visit to Iowa
Spectator ^ | 14th March 2009 | James Forsyth

Posted on 03/14/2009 10:47:48 PM PDT by GOPGuide

“THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that General Petraeus is planning on delivering the commencement address at the University of Iowa in 2010.”

So reports Michael Goldfarb, late of the McCain campaign, on the magazine’s blog.

Petraeus going to Iowa, a state he doesn’t have previous ties to, is going to create a huge amount of buzz about his presidential ambitions because the Iowa Caucuses kick off the whole presidential nomination process. If he does, deliver the address—and Petraeus must know this—it will be seen as a sign that he is thinking about running in 2012.

Previously, it has been thought that Petraeus would not run against a president who had been his Commander in Chief. But there are reports of tension between Petraeus and Obama over both Iraq and Afghan strategy.

Very little is known about Petraues’s politics and no one knows how he would make the transition from soldier to politician. But if he did enter the race, it would shake things up dramatically. He would instantly become a top tier candidate and the most serious threat to Obama's chances of winning a second term.

{But there are reports of tension between Petraeus and Obama]

Ya think? Maybe a little?

Obama would fire his butt if he could, but then he’d have a mutiny.

My guess is he’s a conservative and if that’s the case, I hope he goes for it because he’ll have my enthusiastic vote.

It's too bad Petraues wouldn't have an opportunity to announce his arrival on the national political scene before the 2012 election. Obama would never be where he today save for a speach he gave in 2004.

I've got no idea, nor does anyone else, what his political leaning may or may not be. But, I'm not going to get excited because I've been too disappointed in the past when looking for the "next great Republican". See Mr's Powell, Swarzennager, Romney et. al.

Petraues is a genius though. He his masterfully articulate and clearly has more than above-average leadership skills. It will be interesting to watch.

Anyone who can credibly challenge the messiah deserves support. If Petraeus can stop a second term, he deserves our support.

In the meantime, let's check out his philosophy.

If Petraeus is conservative, he would make a great candidate.

Nobody knows what his ideas are in terms of policy.

That’s what the primaries are for.

I would never trust current military brass, steeped in a culture of political correctness and completely personalized morality. Big, big mistake without having proven chops as a governor or some such.

If Obama fails to keep us safe, it will be President Petraeus in 2013.

Holy Cow!

Just last night I was dreaming that he was giving a SOTU address! Oddly, I dont know what he sounds like, so his voice in my dream was of Douglas MacArthur.

Hope he runs as an independent.

Well, he knows quite well what Obama intends to do with and to the military. And we know he is not only a better commander than Wesley Clark but a whole lot smarter. I think a lot depends on what Obama does about Afghanistan, and foreign policy in general. Does a responsible president neglect the economy and foreign policy while trying to fix national medicare? That is what Obama has been doing over the last 50 days.

I don't have a clue about Petraeus as a politician. Nor have I served in the Military.

Petraeus as a Military Leader is quite remarkable.

I heard this story a few years back. He is pretty impressive. What I liked most, the Soldier that erred was not court-martialed. Patraeus was generous and told the Soldier to learn from his mistake and carry on....quite impressive.

FWIW, Bill Frist performed life saving surgery on him years ago and they remain close friends. I don’t know if he shares Frist’s views.
