In what should be an extremely worrisome sign for the Obama administration, even those who most fervently supported Barack Obama are now beginning to express substantial doubts about his ability to govern.
Columns by the Washington Post's David Broder (who proclaims the end of the Obama honeymoon), the NY Daily News' Michael Goodwin, and the always-reliable Michael Barone highlight the point.
Mind you, it's not Broder, Goodwin or Barone expressing their own opinions. Rather, they're quoting Obama loyalists.
Broder: "[S]ome thoughtful congressional Democrats with whom I have spoken . . .worry that [Obama] has bitten off more than he can chew. "
Goodwin: "[A] veteran Democratic pol approached me with a pained look on his face and asked, 'Do you think they know what they're doing?'"
Barone: "We've been hearing a lot of criticism of Barack Obama in recent days from pro-Obama corners -- from celebrity investor Warren Buffett, from moderate conservative columnist David Brooks, from one of the Democratic Party's deepest thinkers, William Galston . . ."
Obviously, it's premature and foolish to say that the administration is in trouble; that's no more true than it was to believe that the Second Coming was at hand on Inauguration Day.
Nevertheless, a meme is developing among the elites and pundit class -- and such memes often spread, relatively quickly, to the public at large. And this meme is one that should be very disturbing to the Administration -- because it's based on competence.
In a robust economy, people are willing to give a new, untried President time to get his bearings. But in difficult times, people expect a President to get the job done -- especially one who has been touted as a virtual Messiah, who is surrounding himself with the Best and Brightest. And so far, there isn't much about the administration's record of accomplishment that offers a lot of encouragement for all the people who so vociferously pinned their hopes on an Obama presidency.
And the new Obama strategy -- stepping up the blame-shifting game for the troubled economy -- carries more than a whiff of desperation. What's more, it isn't likely to do him any favors at all. Obama's personal popularity depends on retaining his image as someone who is seeking to bring an end to the divisive politics of the past. So how, exactly, does he plan to do that as he whines and points fingers at President Bush?
After all, weren't these the problems he promised us he could solve if he was given the top job?
“When will they ever learn?”
“When will they evvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvver learn”?
You’re absolutely right. Either meeting God or in this life, the next 911 or epidemic.
I’ve posted this elsewhere, but there is something frighteningly destructive about his behavior. He doesn’t even pretend to care about the Presidency and what it means, and seems to want to do the maximum amount of damage in a limited amount of time.
I believe that he knows that at some point his birth certificate will be released and wants to destroy what he can while he has time.
He is governing exactly like who he is, an ACORN, Wright, Ayers radical leftist with nothing but contempt for our institutions and anyone who would oppose him.
Every time I see Rohmer, I'm reminded of "Aunt Clara" (actress Marion Lorne) from the old "Bewitched" TV series from the '60s
You are absolutely right. So was Geraldine Ferraro when she said before the election that Obama wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't black.
You make good points but really, any analysis of this administration is incomplete without pointing out that he’s a figurehead and we’re being ruled by Pelosi and Reid, mostly Pelosi. Obama is so weak even his own party recognizes he’s only an affirmative action hire.
I've been saying it for weeks.
The situation is: Obama is naive, inexperienced, and his ideas are down-right socialist and un-American. Furthermore, he is bound to "fail" by just about any objective measure you care to name.
The probable result is: "veteran" dems with more political savvy had to know this was going to happen too. They may have idiotic ideas about governing our Nation, but no-one ever said they were politically stupid. I have thought, basically since O was elected, that sooner or later the love-fest was going to end, and the 'rats were literally and figuratively going to abandon the ship.
Some are no-doubt already looking towards the 2010 elections, and preparing to campaign. They have got to walk a fine line - distance themselves from an administration that is a B grade disaster flick in the making...while not alienating the "faithful." I believe 2010 is going to be a good year/election for the GOP. I believe 2012 will be even better. By then Obama's failed policies will have shown the younger generation exactly what a recession is like, and exactly why we do not want big, obtrusive government. All you really need to do is point out to them - what if there were someone in control of the government with whom you completely disagreed? Would you want them having this much power over your life? The best government is the smallest government, period.
0bomo = classic conman. Always talking never did a damn thing in his life
Does the Constitution contain a Mulligan rule??
Pray for America, Our Troops and obama’s continued Failure
Gee, do you think maybe a little executive experience would’ve helped?
You know, maybe something like governor of a minor state, or even mayor of a small town or something?
But of course then we might not have had all the advantages that one gets from a “career” in community organizing.
Yep, and he's a leftist ideologue with a lot of half formed ideas, and Pelosi and Reid and other Dems are filling in the details so far. Never has such an unqualified and inexperienced person been nominated by a major party, let along elected president.
Hopefully, Republicans will begin to minimize the damage as more and more voters realize what a weak president and cabinet now occupy our highest offices.
BINGO!
I spend a lot of time in Oregon which is 95% white. The self satisfaction (white guilt) of Obama support was, as an easterner, palpable and nauseating. But of course the Media effort of resentment against GWB also was a major factor. The supposed educated people in Oregon actually swallow the New York Times like candy.
This is REACTIONARY behavior. And the Left knows how to employ it.
Come on 2DV.The fun part is they know they have stepped on their dick. Now is the time to really rub their faces in it and never let up on ‘em.
Yes, but I remember the “Incredible Shrinking Presidency” Newsweek cover on Klintoon. But he still got through impeachment and served two terms.
And some of the most liberal states have the highest percentage white populations. And those states traditionally send some of the most liberal members of all to Congress. They can have their liberalism and eat it, too. They don't have to live it in their daily lives since their population lack the 'diversity' they claim to value so highly.
LOL
They liked all the socialist ideas of the Great O, but they didn't think he would really try and do them ALL in his first 100 days. I think they expected the Clinton approach of good speeches and no action.
Now they look at their investments and shake their heads.
