Tests show Chinese athletes 'faking their age'
BEIJING (AFP) A government investigation in southern China has shown that thousands of athletes there are likely to have faked their ages in an effort to gain an advantage over their rivals.
Bone tests of nearly 13,000 athletes found that over 2,000 were likely older than their registered age, according to the Sports Bureau of Guangdong Province, which carried out the probe.
The tests were carried out on athletes registered at provincial sports academies with most youths in their teens, it said in a report posted on its website last week.
Some of the athletes were up to seven years older than their registered ages, but most only differed by a year or two, said the report, which listed the names and disciplines of all those tested.

We have no idea... it's so widespread. We'll make sure it won't happen again.
Are they going to revoke the medals of these cheaters?
Ping!
Well NFS!
Communists? Dishonest?
Naw.
Wasn’t the big stink during the Olympics that the Chinese gymnast were TOO YOUNG? Why would being too old cause any issues?
I didn’t think Connie Chung was really 27
Of course the use of anabolic steroids will accelerate bone aging too.
Pong!
That’s her IQ, not age
Too old, huh? How about the little girls who looked too young?
Depends on the sport.
No no no. That was just her name: Wei Tu-Yung.

If he's 17 years old playing in the 10 year old basketball league. The Chinese Department of Sports think they've found the next Yao Ming instead of just an older kid with a fake birth certificate and move him and his parents to a nice apartment in Beijing to train for the olympics.
Being young isn't always an advantage in sports.
Imagine an 18 year old wrestling a 12 year old. Get the picture?
I believe that it would be in gymnastics - particularly women's. Maybe ice skating. Equestrian events, perhaps. Events where size/body mass/body shape play a real role.
Can't think of too many other "money" sports where it might matter. Certainly not America's big four (NHL, NFL NBA, and Baseball)
Ever see an NFL player smaller than low 200s?
When he went to try out for the pros, they told him to get bigger, then try again later. Astonishing.
He played a little in Canada until got tired of not being able to get out of bed easily. Likely was a smart move, he quit while he still had two working knees.
The power to weight ratio for yonnger athletes, particularly young girls, is astonishing. Like ants. As they grow that advantage is reduced substantially.
