Mexico slaps tariffs on US products in dispute [McCain expresses regret]

MEXICO CITY (AFP) — Mexico on Monday said it would place tariffs on nearly 90 US products after Washington canceled a program that allowed some trucks from Mexico to operate in the United States.

There is to be an "increase in customs duty on almost 90 industrial and agricultural products," Economy Minister Gerardo Ruiz Mateos said in a statement.

Ruiz said the increase would represent some 2.4 billion dollars, but did not name the products.

. . . . .

The move drew a sharp rebuke from US Senator John McCain, who said he regretted Mexico's decision and also lashed out at US President Barack Obama and lawmakers for backing "protectionist" policies.

"I deeply regret the action taken by the Mexican government and the harm it may cause to American businesses," said McCain, who lost his bid for the presidency in 2008 to Obama.

"Unfortunately, this is a predictable reaction by the Mexican government to a policy that now puts the United States in clear violation of the North American Free Trade Agreement," he added.

"We must take steps to prevent escalation of further protectionist measures -- actions that only serve to harm American business during these tough economic times when these businesses need a worldwide marketplace to prosper."

My trade surplus with my employer is just a trade deficit with his clients in the end, no?

There is no such thing as a trade deficit or surplus. There is just trade.

The idea that trade must be balanced is absurd on its face.

Only the most retarded moron could look at this country and see a post industrialized economy. Maybe you hold that view because of your unhappy position and place. Being bitter is no way to go through life.

When you have no understanding of math, how our economy works; and when you don't even possess the most basic critical thinking skills, life can be hard. Then you find yourself saying moronic things like cutting off all trade with a country will stop the flow of illegals. Hyperbole? I don't think so (but nice try). The mindless rantings of a helpless moron? Absolutely.

Aw shucks, I was just wondering if you’d elaborate on why you feel some legal American jobs are worth saving, and some legal American jobs are worth sacrificing because you’re frustrated about illegal immigration.

Did I ever say cutting off trade would stop illegal immigration? Maybe you need some remedial reading lessons, McCain. The word “and” in the sentence is your first clue.

Maybe you should lobby for those ever reliable mexican truckers, but first you might want to read what those truckers are up now, before the floodgates are opened. Then you can come back and tell me all about the wonderful math and economics of your beloved illegal alien invasion.

Dude, your first and second paragraph are jello-wrestling each other. In the first you admit no link. In the second, you try to make one.

You missed my other requirement stated in my first post. Namely, build the Hunter Border Fence. And FWIW, I’m not really for cutting off trade with the mejicans. I am for not allowing their trucks on our roads, however.

Ah, yes....SAFE Mexican trucks?

Breaking...

U.S., Canadian tourists killed in Mexico bus wreck, reports say
[snip]At least 10 passengers from the United States and Canada were among 11 people killed in a bus wreck with a tractor-trailer in northeast Mexico, news reports said Tuesday.

El Porvenir newspaper said the accident occurred when a truck driver went off the road and then overcorrected and swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting the bus.

Video from the crash scene in northeast Mexico shows the side of the bus sheared away.

At least 15 passengers were injured in the Monday afternoon crash near Monterrey, on the road between Saltillo and Zacatecas, the reports said.

The bus was operated by Senda Express and left McAllen, Texas, on its way to Zacatecas in central Mexico.

Let's see....you said: Build the fence and sell them nothing

Then you said: About 1/2 of what it costs annually to have 20 million illegals here sponging off services and filling our prisons. Not to mention the costs to the multitudes of US citizens who are the victims of the illegal aliens - crime victims and displaced workers alike.

What do your comments have in common with mine? Oh yeah, nothing. You sound like a guy who thinks others, like yourself, can't add 2+2. You're the one who correlated trade with illegal immigration and now you're denying doing so just like you tried to convince us that this was all simply hyperbole on your part (after defending it for several pages of posts). Protectionists regularly attempt to tie free trade in with illegal immigration. It doesn't make any sense but that fact has never stopped them from trying, and trying, and trying. Your effort here is just another in that long, sad cycle.

Now you're trying to convince us that the word "and" makes all the difference. Ok, so be it, but that means you want to export nothing to our second largest trading partner resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of jobs for Americans.

It's clear you have no idea what you're talking about and can't make your point, whatever it is. Now you're claiming I support Mexican trucking into the US. Maybe I do and maybe I don't. I don't recall making a claim either way here. Show me where I, in any way, showed support for the illegal invasion that's making you incoherent on this thread. Standing by.

Listen nancy. My original post was regarding Mexico slapping tariffs on 90 products for retaliation of killing off their wet dream trucking program.

You decided that you wanted to tell me all the sacred virtues of our trade with mexico, so I slapped you down, ignoring the fact you couldn’t recognize hyperbole.

Go lobby for Mexico trucks. That’s what this thread is about, ain’t it?

Please, nobody with a brain is going to buy into your nonsense. You believe what you want to believe but the fact it took you numerous posts, after being woefully unable to support anything you posted, to finally plead that your first post was simply hyperbole, is all the proof we need that your fingers, and not your brain, originate your thoughts (such as they are).

Now that you've pumped up your bruised ego, maybe you'd like to have a go at those sacred virtues of our trade with Mexico again.

I'm still waiting for you to cite where I supported Mexican trucks into the US as well as where I supported illegal immigration.

I'm also waiting for you to explain how our trade deficit with Mexico is bad for us and why NAFTA is bad for us when we're exporting tens of billions more to Mexico today than we were before NAFTA passed. Then it would be good to hear from you as to why you, being a conservative and all, would want to restrict individual freedom and deny Americans the right to trade freely with whom they choose as long as they are not breaking the law. Then, finally, you can educate us on the fallacy of comparative advantage and why it doesn't really work even though some of the greatest (conservative) economists of our time say otherwise.

Go ahead Pilgrim, get busy. But you slapped me down.....ROFL!

Are you suggesting that, if we ban pilot program Mexican trucks operating in the United States, bus crashes in Mexico will be averted? Would those averted bus crashes then, in turn, prevent bus crashes in the United States?

No, as usual YOU concluded what my ‘logic’ was. I posted an article. Read it and shut up for a change. We get it, rudeboy, you’re all for anything that might make you a cheap buck at the cost of all of us.

You posted an article that has nothing to do with the subject of the thread, and you are counting on others being too stupid to point it out.

"Oh look, here's an article about the Mexican truck pilot program--Quick! Google and post an article about a traffic accident in Mexico!"
