I am friends with an elderly couple from Romania. Although they later escaped to the West, they had seen the advent of communism in Romania and the transformation to a totalitarian form of government. They find what is going on today in America quite familiar and they are worried about it. They have often voiced a sentiment similar to the one of Hayek's that you have quoted above. That is that socialism will not get for idealists what they imagine; instead they will not get equality, they will not get justice, they will not get a life of plenty. What they will get is the loss of freedom and totalitarianism.
