USS Hartford website:

LA Class boat. Highly maneuverable and not as big as the Sturgeon class that proceeded it.

“...As they should. Too bad we can’t hold Congress to such a degree of accountability”

Good point. Very few congresscritters would get past the security checks to become a sub commander. Heck, they couldn’t qualify to be anything on something as technically sophisticated as a nuke sub.

Wanna really be scared? Think of the Obamaloon as a commander. Gads, I forgot, that idiot is Commander in Chief!

The article doesn’t say one way or another, but given that the max depth of the water in the shipping lanes is only about 300 ft, I would hope the sub was, at the time, on the surface.

The military says in a statement that the collision occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time on Friday (5 p.m. EDT, Thursday). ... The USS Hartford, a submarine, collided with an amphibious ship, the USS New Orleans.

(Plus, its not exactly a good time for a career change.)

I beg to differ. Sturgeon boats were much smaller than 688’s. I used to repair both classes.

When did they start putting soldiers on submarines?

About the same time Biden referred to McCain as a soldier.

From the Stupid Shall Be Punished blog, a copy of the 5th Fleet press release:

Here’s the news release from Fifth Fleet:

A U.S. Navy submarine and U.S. amphibious ship collided in the Strait of Hormuz early Friday morning, March 20, 2009.
The collision between USS Hartford (SSN 768) and USS New Orleans (LPD 18) occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time (5:00 p.m. EDT, March 19).
Fifteen sailors aboard the Hartford were slightly injured and returned to duty. No personnel aboard New Orleans were injured.
Overall damage to both ships is being evaluated. The propulsion plant of the submarine was unaffected by this collision. New Orleans suffered a ruptured fuel tank, which resulted in an oil spill of approximately 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel marine. Both ships are currently operating under their own power.
The incident is currently under investigation.

Haven’t collisions been happening rather frequently in the USN lately? I think this is the fifth such incident I’ve read about, so far.

Yes, they do seem to keep running into things....

I would have agreed with you however I was on the 662 and it was 392 feet. I also thought the LA class was larger however on the spec on this boat is:

Length: 360 feet (109.73 meters)

Maybe a shorter design for the class for a special purpose.

LA class are 60ft longer, a foot wider at the beam and displace more than 200 more tons of seawater than the Sturgeon class (a bit less for stretch hulls).

The news just reported about 25K gallons of fuel was spilled, so expect Iran to scream about the US causing an oil slick on their shores.

If the sub was on the surface then he was not the more maneuverable vessel. Think about it. Submarines do not have a keel & so they have some directional instability while cruising surfaced.

There was another collision involving a surfaced sub a few years ago. The sub was cruising a parallel course while re-supplying from a large supply ship. The 2 vessels bumped when the sub side-slipped into the larger vessel.

Not enought to go on in this story, but if they were surfaced I could see this happening very easily.

These Captains obtained their commissions during a previous administration, which also set the rules for navigation. It’s Bush’s fault.
