Aiken, Richmond and Columbia counties.

Local law enforcement agencies also report hearing the boom, but no one knows what caused it.

Chris Turner, and Aiken County resident, told WJBF News Channel 6’s Sheena Bodie what he saw and heard, in a phone interview. We have also been informed that two Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies reportedly saw a fireball in the sky.

An Aiken County resident describes to WJBF that he saw a fireball in the sky, after a loud boom was heard all over the CSRA around 3:00 a.m., Friday morning. Dr. Gary Senn, the director of the DuPont Planetarium at USC-Aiken stopped by our noon Newscast and spoke with our Mary Morrison about the possible causes. You can also let us know what you heard or saw.

According to the Director of the DuPont Planetarium at USC-Aiken, Gary Senn, the cause of the boom could have possibly been a meteor. Stay tuned to WJBF Newschannel 6 and WJBF.com for more on this developing story.

Let us know below by leaving a comment to let us know what you saw or heard. You can also report meteor/fireball sightings to the American Meteor Society’s website.

Mystery boom puzzles Staten Island residents

Staten Island residents are trying to figure out what caused a loud boom that was heard in at least six neighborhoods.

The explosion-like blast rattled windows of homes at about 7:55 p.m. Monday. It could be heard for miles.

Police and firefighters responded to numerous calls to 911, but the loud noise remained a mystery on Tuesday.

Police say they found no explosion anywhere in the borough and Con Edison reported no outages or transformer explosions.

IIRC, there was a similar event in TX a couple of weeks ago.

It was later said to be a meteorite.

Yeah but this one had a fireball associated with it. That’s why I call sonic boom. The other booms and rattles sound like perhaps you got earthquakes a coming

Hey TaraP, you were saying...

JAN 7th, 2009
Scientists hear mystery boom from space
Radio noise from distant cosmos is six times louder than expected

I don’t know if you remember, but I was talking about that one before — and I was pointing out that this one is *not* a “noise” that one hears with the ears. It’s radio frequency and you cannot pick that up with your ears. No one will hear that one. Only scientists can “hear” that one (and notice that “hear” means with *instruments only*).

You have to be precise about these things if you’re going to report this kind of stuff going on. In fact, all this kind of thing needs to be analyzed very precisely, in each and every case — because just like the Air Force Bluebook project showed — the overwhelming majority of such reports are *always* explained by common things, once the details are known.

And then, you are left with a very few items that are “unexplained”. So, you can probably figure the same thing here that the vast majority of these kinds of reports can always be attributed to normal and ordinary things — once you know the facts of the case. The problem is — hardly anyone bothers with following them up anymore. So, really, all that is going on is a lot of reports that would be ordinary and explained, if anyone bothered taking the time with it — but who wants to, it would be too tedious to do that all the time...

Sonic boom indeed.

A number of years ago my wife and I saw a fireball race across the sky one summer night. A minute later we heard the sonic boom. It was extraordinary.

Do you recall the noises that were produced in the San Francisco Bay a number of years back? I believe it turned out to be some kind of marine life...
