Pictures of hunger: Photo project captures the life of those in need [Where are the fathers?]
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | March 1, 2009 | Pauline Arrillaga

... she makes chicken for her children but eats Oodles of Noodles herself...

... She is 29, with twin babies and a toddler, facing eviction because she's $300 behind on rent...

... The little girl, 15-16 months old, wears a striped top that swallows her tiny arms. Her nose is runny, her eyes empty. Hers is not the picture of hunger that Americans are accustomed to seeing. She isn't emaciated, like those living in squalid conditions in famine-stricken countries, but she is underweight and malnourished, often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula...

... poor diets lacking in fruits and vegetables, in children who are fed fatty, cheap foods like hot dogs or ramen noodles...

... Even before the economy tanked, some 36 million adults and children struggled with hunger in 2007...

... She doesn't pity herself, not when she gives her kids hot-dogs because that's all she can afford, not each and every day that she goes without breakfast. Not on this day, when she has yet to put a single morsel in her mouth. Years ago, when the hunger was almost too much to bear, she learned a trick: She'd flip through takeout menus to look at pictures of the food and, eventually, just looking was enough to diminish her cravings.

... one of her 2-year-old, his arm outstretched, asking her welfare case officer for something to eat...

... Foodstuff hidden behind piles of clothes so it's not eaten too fast....

If you have a pressure cooker beans can be made fast.

Put beans and water in. Run up to pressure. Let pressure bleed off while still sealed. Drain, Rinse, Add onions, meat and any other fixin’s and run up to pressure for about 15 minutes for pinto beans.
Presto beans are done.

Hot dogs, per pound, cost much more than ground beef or chicken breast. It's just that hot dogs are easy to cook for the lazy.

Take some ground beef, tomato paste, and pasta and you can make spaghetti and meatballs from scratch for much less than hot dogs.

“often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula...”

We need a war on stupidity, not a war on hunger. Chips and soft drinks are more expensive than milk. You can get a 25 pound bag of rice for 10 dollars at costco and a huge bag of beans for not much more. There are lot of healthy foods you can buy for very little if you aren’t an idiot. Besides, what are mothers with no means of support doing having multiple births. How is it my wife and I had to wait 10 years to have kids so we could afford them and these nitwits pop them out in litters.

“I’ll state the obvious. Bullsh#t on the “hunger”.

This lady could use a couple of months in Kenya where there are REAL hungry people.”

You got that right. People from third world hell holes who are truly starving and dying would gladly trade places with this welfare queen.

That’s exactly it. Most of these people are too darned lazy to cook healthy meals.

ALL OF THEM? AND YOU KNOW THIS FOR CERTAIN?

You left out the cadillac....where's the Cadillac in your picture?????

find me someone in this country that is STARVING. I've been to countries and have seen STARVATION.

One person, find me one person in this country that is STARVING. Not crazy and off meds, not crack or meth head, not anorexic, not some sick twisted parent punishing a kid... but a person in these United States that is not able to get food. Walking along and has a net nitrogen deficit with no muscle mass and a large belly from ascitic fluid from months of food depravation. Puhleeze. This country throws away enough food to feed Kenya for a decade in one year.

What a crock.

I've got news if you think that we've got people starving. All that means is we got people too stupid to breathe, cause this country, the USA is the most generous country in the world. If you or I or anybody actually saw a person that was emaciated and too weak to even hold their head up.... we'd take them to the nearest ER, call the cops and find out what the heck is going on. The newspapers would be all over it and local charities or citizens would line up to help out. That's what our country is all about...

The only place that I've seen a few skinny poor people is when I did some work in Appalachia, cause a lot of them were to proud to accept charity and didn't trust "the government". But that was about 30 years ago and now we got fat poor people there also.

I'll tell you what I've seen a lot, is people blowing off looking for part time work, cause they have unemployment benefits paying a check. They take a couple of classes at the local Junior College and just putz around. Sometimes you have to actually MOVE to find a job.

Like the lady in this story... she's pathetic. Talk about cap and trade for carbon credit. This fat tub of lard is a net minus in the CO2 department.

She should be made to pay off the taxpayers for her CO2 since she produces nothing but a couple of kids by an invisible father.

What are those poles sticking up on the sidewalk?

Some of those poles are the remains of parking meters. Some I can not identify.

Hot dogs contain complete animal protein. Lots of it. Beans do not.

That's why there is BEANIE WEENIES!
