Pictures of hunger: Photo project captures the life of those in need [Where are the fathers?]
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | March 1, 2009 | Pauline Arrillaga

... she makes chicken for her children but eats Oodles of Noodles herself...

... She is 29, with twin babies and a toddler, facing eviction because she's $300 behind on rent...

... The little girl, 15-16 months old, wears a striped top that swallows her tiny arms. Her nose is runny, her eyes empty. Hers is not the picture of hunger that Americans are accustomed to seeing. She isn't emaciated, like those living in squalid conditions in famine-stricken countries, but she is underweight and malnourished, often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula...

... poor diets lacking in fruits and vegetables, in children who are fed fatty, cheap foods like hot dogs or ramen noodles...

... Even before the economy tanked, some 36 million adults and children struggled with hunger in 2007...

... She doesn't pity herself, not when she gives her kids hot-dogs because that's all she can afford, not each and every day that she goes without breakfast. Not on this day, when she has yet to put a single morsel in her mouth. Years ago, when the hunger was almost too much to bear, she learned a trick: She'd flip through takeout menus to look at pictures of the food and, eventually, just looking was enough to diminish her cravings.

... one of her 2-year-old, his arm outstretched, asking her welfare case officer for something to eat...

... Foodstuff hidden behind piles of clothes so it's not eaten too fast....

Criminalizing masculinity and rewarding single and perverse parent arrangements have made this situation a reality.

“She isn’t emaciated, like those living in squalid conditions in famine-stricken countries, but she is underweight and malnourished, often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula.”

Milk was on sale for $1.50/gallon last week, I don’t buy it but noticed it wasn’t $4 anymore.

Chips and sugary drinks cost more than that. Do the math. Money is not the problem, it’s priorities.

I wrote a half dozen one line jokes about the economy.

You know it’s bad times when the democrats complain about the plight of the homeless during their own administration.

You know it’s bad when rich women are fat and poor women are skinny.

There are more but you get the idea.

Yeah, it’s typical isn’t it? Overweight Welfare Momma toting illegitimate kids down a trashed-out neighborhood.

Someone should not just follow her around to see what slurping from the public trough she does but also calculate what this woman and her children are costing taxpayers.

Including a reasonable allocation for overhead. I bet the bottom line is outrageous.

Who said that she should ONLY live on beans? Not me. But beans are plants from the good earth and hot dogs are processed food in a factory with cheaper quality meats and meat by products, most loaded with fat and salt. Meat eaters in general have higher risk of obesity and clogged arteries, which a lot of black people already suffer from.

No, beans, rice, a little cheese, fruits and veggies in a salad are much more nutritious than hot dogs.

Hot dogs make a wonderful occasional meal. If she is feeding them hot dogs every day, it’s because she is either lazy or stupid.

She could buy a fryer for a few bucks and roast it, serve it with mashed potatoes and homemade gravy and a vegetable. She could then boil the carcass, add a bucks worth of rice, a bucks worth of carrots, and serve a nutritious soup.

She could serve peanut butter and honey on whole wheat bread with an apple on the side.

She could boil eggs and cut them up in a bowl of greens.

Don’t blame the hot dogs, blame the mother.

Somebody needs to check and see what she’s doing with her food stamps and, undoubtedly WIC. Young children of this age are not that expensive to feed and you get the same amount of food stamps if your kid is 16 or 16 months, plus qualifying for WIC is fairly easy and they give you tons of food. I knew people who received food stamps that would buy really expensive foods when they got them and then had nothing left the last two weeks of the month.

There is no reason to give your kids chips instead of real food. Whole chicken's are on sale at my grocery store this week for $0.67 a pound. They freeze for months. Cantaloupes are 2 for $3. Cans of tuna are $0.75 each. Not to mention, water is friggin free, no reason to give a baby soda except bad parenting.

Plus if you are going to make a point about hunger, having the lead photo be a person who is 40 pounds overweight and wearing brand new clothes, isn't the best idea.

Beans do taste good with hot dogs in them.

Also, if she breastfed her babies she’d save herself (and the taxpayer) oodles of money in formula bills.

No wonder the TV Networks and Newspapers are suffering. This thread alone is enough entertainment for a week. LOL

She could buy low fat tortillas and use beans as the main ingredient instead of fatty meat to make nachos. Much more nutritious than hot dogs. Plus natural fiber in beans help control cholesterol counts, and blacks traditionally have greater problems with high cholesterol and high blood pressure (which could also be aggravated by the high salt content in hot dogs).

Where are all of the pictures? All I see is a photo of an overweight woman walking down the street.

A bag of chips is about the same price as a gallon of milk.

Why is her mother buying one and not the other?

The article says at the bottom the photos were removed.

You are both right. There are tons of things people can do with cheap staples. For whatever reason, these people just don’t want to do that.

_________
They really do. I live what we call Beanie Weenies. Baked beans, add some brown sugar, a little mustard, 2 T of chopped onion, Kosher International hot dogs. Bake for 45 minutes at 325 degrees. Serve with corn and brown bread. YUM
