McALLEN, Texas Millions of state tax dollars tagged for increased border security were spent on law enforcement equipment and positions away from border areas, according to a state audit.
The Office of Emergency Management spent most of more than $79 million between September 2005 and November 2008 to combat crime in border regions, but the report from the State Auditor's Office cited several examples of squad cars, helicopters and new positions that landed elsewhere in Texas.
The Department of Public Safety, Parks and Wildlife Department and the Governor's Division of Emergency Management received about $142.3 million in state and federal funds between fiscal 2006 and 2009. The agencies had spent just over half of it, The McAllen Monitor reported Friday.
The audit noted that 105 new DPS squad cars were distributed across the state and 106 used vehicles were sent to the border.
A new $7.4 million twin-engine helicopter was stationed in Austin and a used single-engine chopper was sent to Laredo.
Five new officers in the DPS Aircraft Division were assigned to stations outside the state's 45-county designated border zone.

Off topic but relevant to redistribution scheming:
This buggery of the taxpayers is being repeated on a scale 10X, state by state, thanks to “The One”. Governor Palin just spit it back in the Dems faces; bless her heart. Alaska’s already too beholden to the Federal government as a developing frontier striving for self-dependence...so that had to be damned hard to turn down.
The General Accounting Office has just been back stabbed like the INS was (spoons to erect a barrier against a tsunami). The era of Bread and Circuses is upon us.
Upon us on us.
My gov is the AntiPalin.
Here in Michigan we’re considering spending a billion dollars of “stimulus” money just to balance the books.
IOW we’re going to spend a billion dollars to be in the black for about two seconds before we start redigging the hole with an even bigger shovel. Thank God for term limits
Have to keep the politicians safe ya know?
Just like with tobacco revenues. “Oh the money will be used for anti-smoking programs and prevention.” MY ASS
Rio Bravo officials display police cars [and no police force! Texas or Taxes?]

I’m not down on any state taking the money to offset it’s debts - considering how the Federal government arrogantly declares itself the highest power over what was state and other jurisdictions while never cementing funding. If the Feds can practice power on rhetoric without financial backing the states can surely snatch what the Feds have stolen from the citizens to do something the Feds seem too high and exalted to do.
Pay down government debt on the state level. What a concept.
But look; stealing from Peter to pay Paul still leaves Peter stolen from. We are Peter and we, under this scheme, are being not only ripped off once but twice while being told it’s the patriotic thing to be punked. As if our money lost is a factual given and we should resign ourselves to what we’re told.
I don’t think so. Having the same amount of money taken from us twice equates to an involuntary second mortgage deal where one never gets the house. The good citizens of our nation have been involuntarily drawn into a Ponzi scheme to shore up the Wall Street trend of buying bad mortgages in relabeled packages until the money ran out of breath.
This started with Obama and his scummy buddies lending mortgage money to the insolvent, suing the government to lend mortgage money to the insolvent and the eventual ruination of that system under (ta da!) Obama’s buddies placed in federal powers - bailing out on golden parachutes when it all came crashing down. A man who should have been put in prison became President while millions of idiots ruined their undershorts not knowing he was integral in the crisis.
Someone please hand me a short shotgun.
