4th officer brain dead after shooting in Oakland

Violence began when a parolee opened fire at a traffic stop

March 22, 2009

OAKLAND, Calif. - An Oakland police officer shot during a traffic stop was declared brain dead on Sunday and on life support, a day after three other officers were fatally shot in what was being described as the deadliest day in the department's history, police said.

Officer John Hege, 41, was being kept alive on life support at Highland Hospital after being gravely wounded in the first of two shootings on Saturday, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. Earlier Sunday, Thomason said the officer had died. He later released a statement saying Hege was brain dead but on life support until a final decision could be made on organ donation.

That's interesting considering that earlier reports have him as deceased.

All those Oakland Police Officers should submit their resignations en mass and let those barbarians fend for themselves.

"(Mixon) was on parole and he had a warrant out for his arrest for violating that parole. And he was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon,"

The parole board is responsible for this, allowing a violent felon out.

Prayers for the families of the slain officers. A tragic glimpse of the difficult career of being a law enforcement officer. It’s a shame they didn’t get the drop on this criminal.

> LaTasha Mixon, 28, of Sacramento said Sunday her cousin was “not a monster.”

> “(Mixon) was on parole and he had a warrant out for his arrest for violating that parole. And he was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon,” said Oakland police Deputy Chief Jeffery Israel.

He may not be a monster, but I hope he burns in hell.

As tragic as the killings were has anyone questioned why the SWAT team had to storm the apartment where the gunman was holed up? Once they had him contained and isolated the situation might have been resolved without the loss of additional police lives.

If the parolee was shot at the traffic light Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would by now be leading a mob!

The news media seems more concerned that the gunman couldn’t find a job and was afraid of going back to jail.

Anything I might add describing my feelings would probably get me banned for violating FR posting rules.

There is more to this story which may or may not be revealed in the days and months following.

"There is more to this story..."

I don't understand how both motor cycle cops could have been shot if standard protocol was followed. I can't speak for the Oakland department, but typically, one officer approaches the driver while the other positions himself to the right rear of the vehicle. I also don't understand why the SWAT team showed up in an armored vehicle and penetrated the apartment with a flash-bang grenade instead of employing a contain and negotiate policy.

Sure they are. Look for two themes to come out of this in the following days.

1) We as a society let this poor man down. We weren't sensitive enough to the pain he was feeling.

2) He wasn't the instrument in the deaths of these police officers. The guns were. Something must be done about the proliferation of guns "on the streets."

Best way to get guns off the street, any felon caught with a gun or used a gun in a crime gets an automatic 20 year sentence in addition to any other sentence and it can’t be served concurrently

Yes. There seemed to have been a breakdown in the “contact & cover” technique on the traffic stop.
