CNN Continues to Push Claim That U.S. Guns Fuel Mexican Drug Violence
Newsbusters ^ | 3/25/09 | Matt Balan

On Tuesday’s Newsroom program, T.J. Holmes because the latest CNN on-air personality to forward the dubious claim that guns from the U.S. are a major factor in the rampant drug violence plaguing northern Mexico: “I don’t want to say enabling, maybe not the best word. But still, so many of the guns that are being used in Mexico are guns that come across the border from the U.S.”

His guest, columnist Sam Quinones of the Los Angeles Times, wholeheartedly agreed: “...[W]e can do a lot about the guns.....If you talk to Mexican officials, pretty much they don’t want to talk about anything but all the guns that are coming....down to Mexico and into the hands of cartel guys who are then killing cops, terrorizing a population, and killing off each other and so on.”

They have a criminal problem, not a gun problem.

If this were true, wouldn't this be a case for official Mexican support for a less porous border?

Mr. Calderon, help us build this wall!

We have had a problem with the Mexican border for how long? I am convinced that our government doesn’t want to fix the problem. It doesn’t take a genious to figure this problem out. But.....if they keep allowing the problem to exist, it’s just a distraction from other problems in Washington.

Hmmm...those guns came from the US but we don’t have the violence problems Mexico is experiencing.

The problem is they don’t want a wall as much as a turnstyle. Maybe with a metal detector.

An American citizen who brings a gun into Mexico could face years of imprisonment.

Maybe, maybe not. It’s not like Mexico can’t get guns from other countries too. Anyway, I think this is just smoke to try to get more gun control on American citizens.

Mexicans who bring guns into Mexico are treated differently.

So they’re claiming that their source for this is the Mexican government?

I don’t have the facts at this moment, but I strongly suspect that if we did have the actual facts, we’d find that most of the cartels’ guns are coming from the Mexican government.

Why get should Mexican drug gangs buy guns from the US when they can get them directly from Chinese smugglers?

Gun Smuggling Case. In 1996, 2,000 AK-47 assault weapons were reportedly smuggled aboard a COSCO ship, Empress Phoenix, into the port of Oakland. Two Chinese companies were under investigation for the smuggling: Poly Technologies, which is owned by the General Staff Department of the PLA, and Norinco, or China North Industries Corporation, which is part of China's defense industries and owned by the Chinese government.

Especially if you can tip a dock worker with a few hundred pesos and he’ll load it right into your truck for you at any mexican port.

U.S. use of the drugs is what is fueling this abomination. Follow the money....all the way to Washington if you have the nerve.

The gun grabbing scheme is in full ramp up mode. FNC had an image this morning of recently confiscated guns taken on the U.S. side of the border- none of which were the typical “media” defined assault automatic weapons. They could have been taken out of any Wal-Mart store. Total bullsh*t.
