US to enforce law' banning assault weapons

MEXICO CITY (AFP) – The Obama administration wants to crack down on the sale of assault weapons that are arming Mexican drug cartels, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in an interview with NBC television.

Clinton late Wednesday called letting a previous US ban on the sale of assault weapons expire "a mistake."

"I think these assault weapons, these military style weapons, don't belong on anyone's street," said Clinton who pushed for the ban as a New York senator.

"During the time period from 1994 to 2004, when the ban was in effect, our police in America were able to drive crime down because they didn't have to worry about these assault weapons getting into the hands of criminals and gang members," the chief US diplomat said.

"So we will make the case that we need to put more teeth in the law, try to prohibit the sale outside of our borders of these guns," Clinton said.

But, she acknowledged, a move to renew the ban would draw strong opposition.

"We're going to talk to the Congress, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. It's a very heavy lift," Clinton said.

On the plane to Mexico City, Clinton said drug gangs were "outgunning" Mexican law enforcement with military-style equipment that also included night-vision goggles and body armor.

Clinton is scheduled to visit a police station in Mexico City on Thursday as part of her consultations on the drug wars that have left 6,300 people dead in Mexico since 2008 and that are spilling over the border in the form of kidnappings and other violence.

She is due later to travel to the northern city of Monterrey, near the border with Texas.

Glad I bought mine and had some fun with it before it fell out of my boat.

That's funny because a boat fell on mine.

See why the failed drug war is a war on you? Does everyone get it now?

It hasn't failed. Look at how much power federal, state, and local governments have gained from it at the expense of the governed.

Dang, now I really want the AK-47 I looked at day before yesterday. I just didn’t want to spend 1100 bucks this month.

Purposely confusing automatic (never legal) with semi-automatic weapons (legal) is a certain pretext for reinstatement of the so-called “assault-weapon” ban. Buy now, people. I would dearly love to say more but some government idiot will open a dossier on me, thinking I belong to a militia.

You’re right. It’s about the people having to depend on the almightly Government to “protect” them.

Via Instapundit:

YOU KNOW, I BOUGHT A SUBSCRIPTION TO THE FINANCIAL TIMES, but unimpressive reporting like this from Sheila McNulty and Dan Dombey makes me wonder if my money is being well-spent. The story talks about soaring U.S. gun sales, but fails to mention fears of an Obama gun/ammunition control initiative (spurred by Eric Holder’s remarks) and then repeats the Mexican gun canard.

( THE MEXICAN GUN CANARD REAPPEARS. This despite pretty clear evidence that guns in Mexico are coming from elsewhere. Or from the 150,000 to desert the Mexican Army in the last 6 years.)

Plus, policy quotes are all from regulators or gun-control groups. Honestly, I can get this kind of lazy and misleading stuff anywhere for free — no need to actually pay for it. In fact, the L.A. Times did a much better job on this story days ago, making clear that most of the weapons people are talking about don’t come from America, and particularly not from civilian gun shops, but from illicit military channels.

Leftists lie. It’s the only way they advance their agenda.

Their willing sheep just go along with them.

Case in point, arguing this very issue with a lib inlaw, he declared “why would anyone need a semi-automatic!!!”

I asked him if he could describe what a “semi-automatic” was, knowing he meant “select fire”. Instead, he surprised me with his honesty: “I don’t know”.

Why would they build a dossier on you when they can check out FR... I keep telling some of these people dodging "logs" and "files", if you've ever been active on the web...

I know, and they can find out a lot about you, too that way. My point was that I try to be cautious about what I say and how I say it, knowing there are Sneaky Petes out there in the ether just looking for "incorrect" expressions.

IOW this story is the “for the children” BS excuse.

Why can’t the conservatives just rent our own satelite channel and bypass the media stooges.

I know what you are saying, but they don't need to see an "incorrect" statement, they just need to log and peruse all known data (Web, Stores, Banks...etc.) and build a "profile" for you...

Gun owner... check

Bible owner... check

Believes in constitution... check

Votes Third Party... check

Profile = Potential "domestic terrorist" or militia member.

actually I was thinking along the lines of DishTV or DirectTV.

The same way Obama had his own channel during the election, we can have our own satelite channel.

We can have our own conservative panel show, our own TV show commentators.

The space is there for anyone to use with the money to pay for it.

I saw an article a short time back about new sensors they have. Essentially a radar to see devices under peoples clothes. Its not super portable but they can post them on street corners and search anyone walking by and see if they have anything under their clothes.

This is what the bill will look like:

1. An expanded HR 45, gun owner licensing. All gun owners will have to have these licenses, even owners of facilimie weapons (AKA Airsoft and BB). Licenses will only be granted if the records of the applicant are clean (This includes misdemeanors from decades ago). Licensees will be required to hold $1 million in liability insurance. Possession of otherwise permitted weapons (See #3) without license is a felony.

2. Ammunition accountability... All ammo will be required to be microstamped and will be taxed $1/round. All non stamped ammo will be required to be turned in or thrown away. Possession of non-marked ammo is a felony. This part of the act also bans “Cop Killer” bullets. Furthermore, this will require the gun to leave a microstamp of its own on the ammo.

3. Expanded “Assault Weapons” ban— This includes most all semiauto rifles, anything that can be “Bump Fired”, Semiauto handguns, and Semi-auto shotguns. It also includes pump-action shotguns and “Sniper Rifles” AKA your deer rifle. The AWB will also require people with “Prebans” to register their guns as Machine Guns, and that the tax stamp will go up to $10,000 per weapon. If you can’t afford this, you have to turn the weapon in without compensation...

4. Expansion of the Lautenbach amendment: Removes “Domestic Violence” as disqualifier to gun ownership, inserts any misdemeanor as disqualifer... Anyone with a misdemeanor on their record will be prohibited from owning a firearm. This includes DUI and traffic offenses, and offenses decades ago.

Finally, all CCW permits will be voided. Also, all gun and ammo imports will be banned.
