Dallas Morning News ^

Posted on 03/29/2009 8:11:27 AM PDT by greatdefender

It seems like everybody is beating up on greed these days. In the wake of the AIG bonus scandal, pompous members of Congress, the Obama administration and the media are disparaging the very concept. It's time someone stands up for greed because without it, there would be no United States of America.

BS, one person's opinion does not create fact, if there had not been thousands and thousand of men and women he gave there lives for this country, there would be no country for the leaches to breed and feast upon.

No.

--when I hear the word "greed" , if the circumstance warrants I ask the user if they ever sold a house.

Then , as appropriate, I question whether to avoid any fear of "greed", they of course sold it about , oh say 30% under market price--that usually ends the conversation.

what is greed, anyways?

Greed as the left-wing newspapers would like to have it is the individual’s desire to succeed and gain more for him/herself through work.

But the way we should see it, this desire shouldn’t overwhelm our other commitments such as our commitments to family, etc.

Greed is not good, but the left-wing wants to define any success as greed and use this language to further their attack on capitalism.

“Greed” is lusting after something you haven’t rightfully earned. And what you “earn” is what others agree to pay you for your good and services. There is nothing wrong with looking for opportunities to earn, and wanting to keep what you have earned. That isn’t “greed.”

Well, exactly.  And whenever a clueless liberal starts throwing that word around, I define it just as you have and tell them that they are the greedy ones.

"If I earned a loaf of bread, and you didn't, do you deserve half?  And if I choose to give it to you, which I may in all likelihood, shouldn't that be my choice?"

“BS, one person’s opinion does not create fact”

Of course not.
But it is true that from the pilgrims on to the latest high-tech immigrants, people came here for OPPORTUNITY. And we fought to protect the freedom to pursue that opportunity when people tried to rob us of it.

“Greed” is another word for that self-interested seeking of a better life. It’s a reality that self-reliant self-interested ambition shaped this nation to be what it is today.

What matters isn't for profit vs. non-profit, but how you make your profit.

To say "greed is good" (or "greed is bad" for that matter) is pretty simplistic.

Some returns are a just compensation for one's risks and efforts. Some are the result of fraud and chicanery.

Sometimes it's a little of both. We can see that a sharp dealer's entitled to his profit, but we don't necessarily praise him if he cuts too many corners.

No it's not,

greed (grd) n. An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth.

“greed (grd) n. An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth.”

What defines ‘excessive’? or ‘deserves’? They are subjective. In my book, if you work honestly for something, you deserve the fruits of your labor. If a movie star is so good they make $20 million to star in one movie - is that excessive? Or a best-selling author? What about Warren Buffett, example of ‘greed’ or simply good investing genius? Not to me. Is it to you?

The problem may in fact be that the perfectly healthy ambitious desire to create wealth and enjoy it is castigated as “greed”. When socialists and demagogues speak of ‘greed’, they are using that term against diligent wealth-creating activities. For examples, calling low tax rates as an example of ‘greed’. It is far from it by your definition.

lest we forget pursuit of wealth was the precedent to pursuit of happiness; if it’s legal, and you want it, not a thing wrong with it

The foundation of society is that words have meaning and we communicate. There fore the words need to mean the same to everyone one. There is a difference between one who is an achiever and is successful and one that would whore his mother for a dollar.

I'm sorry your education level does not let you understand that.
