If one nuke can "destroy America", then no defense is going to work anyway (no defense is 100%).

If Newt can't make his blitherings consistent with reality, is it too much to ask that he at least make them internally consistent with themselves?

I think you are wrong. If we have a defense that is only 90%, and an enemy lunches one rocket, we have a 90% chance of survival.

Up that to 99% and we have a 90% chance of surviving a launch of 10 missiles.

This is better than our odds without any defense by a long shot.

Indeed. We've fired dozens if not hundreds of nukes of every size from popgun to the granddaddy Hydrogen variety. Why haven't we disappeared into the mists of time with those? Oh, because they didn't hit population?

IMHO, we could lose any single major population center and survive fine, including my home here in Miami, FL. Except for the cold implacable rage that would spring from such an incident and result in a thermonuclear response never before seen in history, I think the country would soldier on. Well, I should temper my opinion on the national response as to who occupies the White House and Congress.
