Romney backs Obama auto decision, praising 'backbone'
The Hill - Briefing Room Blog ^ | March 31, 2009 | by Michael O'Brien

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) backed the plan for GM and Chrysler put forth yesterday by President Obama, the candidate Romney may face in the 2012 presidential election.

"I think a lot of people expected the president just to cave, write a check, and just hope for the better," Romney said Tuesday morning on CNN. "I think he's expressing some backbone on this."

Romney grew up in Michigan, where his father was governor and, at one time, chairman of a now-defunct auto company. The former 2008 presidential candidate, though, was also sure to tout his own calls for bankruptcy last year, when Chrysler and GM first approached the government seeking support.

"That's something I think he should have said months ago," Romney claimed. "There were a number of us who said bankruptcy or a bankruptcy-like process was something that was needed to get GM and Chrysler on their feet again."

Romney, who won the Michigan Republican primary during the 2008 nominating process, called for the use of the "club" of bankruptcy to force the restructuring of the state's native industry.

"If the parties want to do it voluntarily — and apparently, at this stage, it's looking like they haven't been able to — then you're going to have to have that kind of a club to be able to have these companies restructure their excessive costs," he asserted.

It had nothing to do with him being a Mormon, Only bigoted Christian hating Mormons would think that.

True. I had a lot of problems with Romney. His Mormonism was not one of them. I supported Mitt only after Thompson was out because I thought he wasn't as bad as McPain. That may be wrong, but those two are about on the same level of bad.

“Agreed, the field for 2012 just narrowed.”

Romney? Always leaves me with more questions than answers when it comes to his sincerity and principles, and this latest episode has ensured that he will not have my trust, support, and vote: “Romney backs Obama auto decision, praising ‘backbone’ “

Cantor? Mr. Waffle worked hard to lose my support and vote and finally succeeded, when he stood with dems on the AIG travesty:
“H R 1586 2/3 YEA-AND-NAY 19-Mar-2009 2:44 PM
QUESTION: On Motion to Suspend the Rules and Pass
BILL TITLE: To impose an additional tax on bonuses received from certain TARP recipients.

The small handful of people who have defended Romney statement are right - about his statement. Most Freepers if they read the article would agree with his stand that GM should be allowed to go bankrupt and not be bailed out. That part of Obama’s plan that he praised is OK. The problem is that like the majority of self-destructive Republican today Romney falls in to the praise my opponent when he is right trap. McCain, Huckabee, Romney, most of the congressional leadership are all suckers for this. Obama unveils a big government socialist take over. Romney criticizes most of it (good job) but instead of driving home the partisan argument he feels this suicidal need that Republicans have to be generous to their enemies. Call it the GWB Movie Night at the White House Syndrome. When will the GOP learn that partisanship is the only path to victory and that our opponents are ruthless and unscrupulous. Gentleman have no place in this battle. It’s like the difference between WWI and the WOT. In WWI, the bad guys hold up their hands. You take them prisoner and give them a cigarette. They march in an orderly fashion to the rear. If you surrender you get the same treatment. Our WOT enemies today have no honor and will violate any rule of war or commonly held idea of morality to destroy us. They’ll happily blow up a child holding a white flag. Domestic politics is no different. We have to stop reaching out our hand to the left because they only see it as an opportunity to stab us in the back. Nothing good can come of praising a Democrat even when you agree on something or if they are right. We have to be at least half as ruthless as they are.

Nothing good can come from praising a Democrat. Here’s what Romney accomplished with this stupid act. (1) Provides bipartisan cover for his big government socialists actions - “See even conservative right-wing businessman Mitt Romney said I’m doing the right thing” (Media Version - don’t flame me for calling Romney conservative, you know the media will make him out to be the voice of Reagan when it suits their purpose like this.)
(2) Praising a Democrat always sets yourself up for a holier than thou battle in your own party. Romney’s GOP dectractors have more ammo to use against him. His supporters have to look like fools trying to defend him. Cue the GOP circular firing squad. When will we learn?

*If we lose the NY-20 seat, would that convince you that we are going nowhere?*

If the Democrat wins, it will be with the support the
idiot Libertarian who was running and now threw his
support to the Democrat as they are both pro abortion
among other areas of support.

Sorry, but I can’t find the letter, I seem to have lost it since 2007, I will keep looking for a new link but I know that it can take some time, here is a reference to it that reminds us of the head spinning experience it is to try and define Romney on anything. I do still have a Boston globe article that blows holes in his claims about his mother.

“And so, not for the first time, Mitt set about shifting his public posture on abortion. After the Salt Lake Tribune wrote about Mitt’s stated interest in political office in Utah – and singled out his abortion position as problematic at any state G.O.P. convention—he responded with a cryptic letter to the editor. “I do not wish to be labeled pro-choice,” he wrote, words that instantly breathed life into the Romney-for-Governor-of-Utah talk.

Mr. Romney elaborated no further in the letter, citing his non-political Olympics role—but one his closest friends (who now bundles money for the Romney presidential campaign) told the Tribune that Mitt’s Massachusetts abortion rhetoric had been “a carefully crafted position intended to sound more firm than it was,” as the paper put it.

By keeping his letter to the editor vague, Mr. Romney kept his options alive in both liberal Massachusetts and conservative Utah. And as it turned out, Governor Swift’s administration unraveled in Massachusetts, and when the Olympics wrapped up in February 2002, the Bay State’s G.O.P. begged Mitt—awash in glowing national press coverage—to come home and rescue them.

And when he returned, he promptly downplayed his half-step to the pro-life side, returning to the passionate pro-choice pleadings that he had espoused before but had muted in Utah. He began bringing up his mother again, praising her “courage” for speaking pro-choice language in the pre-Roe era and promised the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League that he would “respect and will support a woman’s right to choose.”

Just like now, his sincerity came into question. And just like now, he feigned exasperation. In ’02, he told his Democratic opponent, Shannon O’Brien, that it was “unbecoming” of her to suggest he had been less than forthcoming on his abortion views. Last week, when the consistently pro-life Sam Brownback raised the same concern, Mr. Romney harrumphed that “I get tired of people that are holier than thou because they’ve been pro-life longer than I have.”

Yes... ~LOL~ that sort of thing. Went through one just a few days ago and even when I presented his own words on C&T to the Romney defender we got the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil response... and more I was actually accused of being a former Huckster supporter -- which was actually the funniest thing on the whole thread..

BTW did you see who Larry King had on as his auto industry experts last night? Ed Begley and Gavin Newsom. I swear this country has gone off the rails.

Rush Responds To Sanford Calling Him An Idiot

Feb 26, 2009

LIMBAUGH: I am told South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford called me an idiot, not by name.
But he said, “Anyone who wants Obama to fail is an idiot.” I don’t anybody else who said it.

So, I guess he’s talking about– … Politicians have different audiences than I do and they’ve got to say things in different ways. So, after he said, “Anyone who wants Obama to fail is an idiot,” then went on in his own way to say,

“Gosh, I hope this doesn’t work.” … He just had to say, “We don’t want the president to fail.”

Hell we don’t! We want something to blow up here politically. We want something to not go right. … We’re talking about freedom that is under assault!

(Sanford is also a Global Warmer)

Since Holy Week is approaching, I’ll parapharse the Bible about Slick Willard: ‘What more proof do we need. His own words have condemned him.’ In this case, however, Slick Willard is guilty as charged - pandering closet statist.

Thank you so much for the article.

We cannot have a repeat of John McCain with Mitt Romney in 2012, and the Boston Globe article is a perfect reminder of that.

Damning with faint praise?

I don't know. It seems a little odd that Romney chose to compliment Obama. I'd bet Romney does have some ulterior motive, maybe to praise him now, then slam him much harder later if Obama fails to follow through should bankruptcy be the only logical choice a few weeks from now.

Proving, without a doubt, how stupid Romney is. Flame me all you want Romneybots but Romney is a RINO, liberal a** kissing SOB, and it has nothing to do with his religion. Those Romney bots that try to say people who don't like Romney is because he is a mormon are just as bad as those who try to say that people don't like Bozo because he is black. Bozo is a wannebee dictator, Romney is an idiot seeking power. They both have no business in politics, and that includes the office of dog catcher.

I should have expected the former Governor of Taxachusetts to do something like this.
