Patrick, while calling Walsh highly capable, said he wished he handled the appointment differently, adding

In non political english this means he wishes he had done it in secret....

It was done in secret. Someone dimed out Walsh’s new salary from inside HEFA.

It is a tough time to be a hack these days.

I know what you mean. I still have family in MA, so I hear a little about what's going on.

I remember telling my Dad that the "Big Dig" doesn't look like a 'Construction Project'. It's more like a 'Union Worker Retirement Plan'.

He didn't disagree.

I tend think that the ones who are actually on a 5:30AM Amtrak (and talking about their work, no less!), are the ones most likely to be actually doing something worthwhile, or at least sincerely trying to. There are certainly a whole lot of employees of governmental and quasi-governmental agencies who haven’t been seen or heard from at 5:30 AM in decades, by anyone other than a high-priced call girl who stayed with her customer for the night.

They're heading to New York to make their morning meetings. These aren't your regular government type hacks and yes some of them are motivated. They're headed to New York to obtain funding, akin to government workers getting up early to vote for their favorite politician. Nothing noble going on here. Worthwhile work, highly unlikely.

With the Dukakis administration 18 years in the rear view mirror, the citizens of Massachusetts have forgotten what it was like to be broke and over taxed - hence the election of Patrick.
