Sebelius paid over $7,000 in back taxes By: Carrie Budoff Brown March 31, 2009 06:31 PM EST

Health and Human Services nominee Kathleen Sebelius has paid back taxes of more than $7,000 stemming from "unintentional errors" revealed during her accountant's review of recent tax returns.

The White House on Tuesday released a letter Sebelius sent to the Senate Finance Committee, detailing how she lacked some proper paperwork in accounting for charitable donations and business expenses. The Kansas governor also mistakenly claimed a deduction on her mortgage interest.

Sebelius was nominated for health secretary after President Barack Obama’s first choice, former Sen. Tom Daschle, dropped out after failing to pay income taxes on free limo rides provided by a friend and Democratic donor.

In attempt to show he didn't consider her nomination in jeopardy, committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) issued a statement at the same time calling for quick action on Sebelius’ bid to serve as health secretary.

How does this happen? Do they get audited during vetting?

Funny how republicans seem to not have ANY issues paying taxes. This seems to be a very partisan problem on the part of the democrat elites.

Trust me. If any R’s would have had any tax issues AT ALL, we would have heard about it during the past few months....

Yeah, sure. They are always unintentional until they get caught. Ah, what were the fines and penalties?

I wouldn’t pay it, although if you send it in under the ACCOUNTANTS doing....you’ll be in a tough spot if you don’t.

This is working out pretty well. If Obama keeps nominating people for government posts then the back taxes they’re forced to pay could make a dent in his deficit.

Anyone notice a pattern? No penalties! Although my sister, who owes $40,000 (over about 8 years' time) has had penalties piled on every year, had her wages garnished, and had liens and levies placed. They don't own a home and live pay check to pay check, but the IRS decides arbitrarily NOT to make the rich and powerful pay the same way, even though they can definitely afford it.

There's got to be a class action lawsuit in there somewhere!

why is it when I make a mistake on my return the IRS nails me every time?

I’m talking $300 or $400. These are legitimate mistakes but somehow they always figure it out...and I’m OK with that.

But how do the Dems get away with it? I think Kathy is toast and why would the great state of Kansas want her back?

Our deficit would be wiped out IF Democrats paid their taxes.

I have seen noone in the media or the blogosphere make the key point yet - which doesn't really have to do with the unpaid taxes. The article says,
Sebelius said she sold her home in Topeka, Kan., for an amount less than the outstanding balance on the mortgage. She continued paying off the loan and the interest for which they continued to claim a deduction.

“Another loan for home improvements was treated similarly,” she wrote.
Here is the question:

How was Sebelius able to sell her house without paying off her mortgage and her home improvement loan at closing?

She got two banks to agree to turn recourse loans into non-recourse loans???

You or I couldn't do that. The only way you or I could do a short sale like that is if we were on the verge of foreclosure & bankruptcy.
