On this the fourth anniversary of the court-ordered, barbaric death of brain-injured Terri Schiavo, it is painfully clear the culture of death is alive and kicking:
A hospital fails to feed a Down Syndrome patient, allowing him to starve to death over the course of 26 days. A subsequent inquiry exposes five other cases of the neglect of patients with learning disabilities.
A "how-to" manual on suicide by starvation prompts the "horrific" and "tortured" deaths of two elderly women.
Voters, judges and legislators around the globe continue to ignore the truth that all human life has intrinsic value and, instead, aid those seeking to bump off the inconvenient elderly and disabled.
Washington and Montana joined Oregon in legalizing physician-assisted suicide.
California now allows nurse-assisted suicide of the "terminally ill" by means of dehydration and starvation.
Idaho stands on the precipice of adopting "futile care" standards which authorize doctors to disregard a patient's advance written directive demanding life-sustaining treatment in the event of incapacitation.
Canada is considering allowing any individual to assist someone to commit suicide with or without a doctor present.
And last month the Italian court-ordered death by dehydration and starvation was carried out on 38-year-old Eluana Englaro, known as "Italy's Terri Schiavo."
Euthanasia is illegal in Italy, as it continues to be in Terri Schiavo's former state of residence, Florida. Following the example of Terri's husband, Michael Schiavo, Englaro's father got the court to rule he could remove Eluana's hydration and nutrition, which it was persuaded to view as "medical treatment."

Far too many Americans have completely embraced abortion, it is not surprising that they are also embracing euthanasia. It will be interesting to see how the pro-death baby boomers will react when they are informed that they must now exercise their "duty" to die.

Aside from Bobby Sands and Karen Carpenter, I've never heard of anyone intentionally starving themselves to death.
I'm thinking "suicide" isn't quite the right word here.
Oddly enough, this actually makes sense.
There's nothing about the medical profession that renders it a protected class in a legal system. If a doctor can help someone kill themselves and get away with it, then so can I.
This will at least give me some comfort that if I am ever involved in an accidental homicide case (a car accident, for example) and face prosecution or other legal action, I will at least have the opportunity to defend myself by suggesting that the victim really wanted to "off" himself and I was just helping him.
It’s a short road from “voluntary” euthanasia to “involuntary” euthanasia...
When you don’t value human life as anything more than “evolved apes”,
there’s no reason not to kill off the inconvenient on either end of life.
The state is reluctant to call it MURDER when they are an active participant.

Thus, "if it feels good, do it!" and "if it's inconvenient and cannot fight back, get rid of it!" There is no concept of love under this worldview, and there is every reason for suspicion of one's fellow human-being, every reason to live in fear. The early history of the USSR is an excellent example.

My Dad who was terminally ill with a rare form of Parkinson’s decided to end his life by not eating or drinking rather than be placed on an IV system that only would have prolonged his life by a few months after his body rejected the feeding tube. So, yes, there are people that purposely take that route. However, like you, I would not consider that suicide.

funny thing about prayer - it works! she is now sitting up and conversing, albeit labored and barely audible. her ticker is bad, and they at first proposed a pacemaker and bypass, then they got real quiet about those, as if they didn’t figure she’d live long enough for them to do any good.
last night, everything was back on the table, and they’re talking about surgery next week if she improves. she still can’t eat, and isn’t really sure who I am, but has shown definite improvement - thanx to all of you and your prayers.
she remains in the coronary critical unit at yale new haven, but it is my hhope that she’ll be moved soon after her bypass...
