The ones I remember from the 50s had either black soles or thick orangey rubber soles -- those were the most popular (and expensive) here in the Maryland-DC area.

I, too, am a fan of saddle shoes.
They are still required footware at east coast Catholic Schools and can be found on Swing Dancing apparel websites.
