Franken puts Pawlenty in a jam
Politico ^ | 4/2/09 | MANU RAJU

The legal fight between Al Franken and Norm Coleman is headed to the desk of Gov. Tim Pawlenty — a no-win predicament for a Minnesota Republican with his eye on a White House run in 2012.

Franken won big Tuesday when a three-judge panel allowed the review of no more than 400 absentee ballots in a race he currently leads by 225 votes. Coleman’s camp says an appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court is coming; once that’s done, the dispute lands in Pawlenty’s lap.

If Franken’s ahead at that point, Pawlenty will have a choice: sign the election certificate that will allow Democrats to seat Franken in the Senate or play to the Republicans whose support he’d need in 2012 by withholding the certificate while Coleman challenges the election in the federal court system.

This is an interesting situation and I'm curious to see how Pawlenty will handle it. Personally, as much as I hate the thought of having Al Franken as Senator, Coleman is really just starting to look like a sore loser at this point. Then again, there's something to be said for just keeping the seat empty...

No, he is fighting voter fraud, used by liberals everywhere.
He should fight it all the way.

At this point in the game, why not have another election? Rules are that for one month each contestant will have 4 debates on the issues and be able to run ads, etc. No absentee ballots and only registered voters with proper ID may vote. Winner take all.

Follow the law. The law states that while legal challenges are working through the Courts, the Cert cannot be given.

Look, if Pawlenty doesn't have the balls to play politics as rough and tumble as the democrats, then he should resign anyway. Tell Flakey Franken that for him to be seated, he and the democrats are going to have to keep playing their shell game till the very end and even then, he may not certify the election because of all the hooliganism surrounding that election. If Coleman isn't to be Senator, then to delay seating Franken for as long a possible has got the next best thing. The law doesn't really matter to these people anyway, it's just a tool or prop in their bag of political tricks.

I'd be for another election as long as NEITHER of these two can have their names on it.

Plus, I want the Iraqi "purple finger ink" voting method instituted. Anyone trying to vote twice should be shot on sight.

The seat may be open for a long time. It might take the six years that the “winner” would have served............

no way this needs to be fought tooth and nail, this is an outrage that Franken has cheated and now expects to be be getting a vote in the senate which would be horrible for us.

What on earth is going on with politics in MN anyway?
Is it that I hate both parties or is it a case of idiots not having a clue and thinking this is American idol, or is it the two cities there with a bunch of idiots in them voting.

What is the media like there, do they have a right voice or is it a left voice?

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Minnesota is likely to have a comedian as a senator. They’ve previously had a pro-wrestler as a governor, and currently have a Muslim as a congressman. Those mosquitoes up there must really be passing a bad virus around.

What would a Democrat governor do? Do you think they would sign such a certificate for a Republican? I think not. I don’t see a dilemma for Pawlenty at all. I wouldn’t sign it in a heartbeat.

The story makes it sound like Pawlenty is wrestling with his conscience about what he ought to do. The implication being the “right” thing would be to sign the certificate and the “wrong, partisan” thing would be to actually follow the law and not sign it until all the legal appeals are over with.

Sorry Politico, I don’t buy your spin.

As an aside, I don’t think either candidate is all that great for the country. So leave the seat vacant for six years and then let Minnesotans do it again and try to get it right this time.

Sore loser my a**. This is an obvious vote fraud scam just like all the close recounts done over the last 15 years by the dems. Finding votes after the fact should be a no no, if they weren’t counted in the first count they shouldn’t be allowed. The “found” votes are always heavily in favor of the demwit candidate, they learned well from the Gore fiasco in 2000. Coleman is the clear winner, the sore loser is the one who keeps having recounts, “finding” votes that didn’t exist before and counting until they are ahead. What part of voter fraud don’t you understand?

Limiting it to “400” ballots that can be contested is also rigging the recount.

If the seat is vacant in 2010, they could have another vote and elect someone for four years to finish the term. Would make sense.

Looking like a sore loser to who?

This is a no brainer for Pawlenty. Let Colemen take it to the Federal courts. It’s obvious that the Dems are stuffing the ballot box.

Franken should be denied his seat as long as possible.

Whatever happened to count all the votes mantra? Huh?

Pawlenty should:

1. ask the Minnesota legislature to allow for a special election, however long that takes,

2. stick to the law and not issue a certificate until all court challenges are exhausted, state and federal. If that takes six years item 1 becomes moot.
