One is a role model, the other a fashion model. One likes to bare her arms, the other — well, she bares it all.
But First Lady Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, do have this in common — both are grabbing as much attention as their famous husbands while world leaders huddle this week in Europe.
The two superstylish first ladies are scheduled to have lunch today, when the paparazzi are likely to burn a new hole in the ozone over Strasbourg, France, the site of their planned tete-a-tete.
But as far as many style mavens are concerned, Obama has already won her faceoff with the Italian-born Sarkozy, who wed the recently divorced Sarkozy last year and lately has busied herself making albums with songs like “You’re My Drug.”
“Carla is old news next to Michelle,” Tina Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair, declared on her Web site, The Daily Beast, the other day.
“Sure, she’s more beautiful in the covergirl sense,” she added of Bruni. “But an Italian heiress who strums the guitar and made a predatory move on France’s reigning little Napoleon isn’t the best poster girl for the scariest economic downturn since the 1930s.”
Ouch!
Previously linked to such rockers as Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, Bruni is perhaps most famous for a nude picture of her that sold at auction in 2008 for $91,000 — more than 60 times the expected price.
France’s first lady skipped London’s G-20 summit this week, choosing instead to wait for the Obamas in France, where world leaders will gather for a NATO powwow.
The brushoff was widely viewed as a snub by the British press, which noted that Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s wife, Sarah, had diligently gathered together 16 presidential spouses for what became known as “The First Wives Club.”
“The 41-year-old supermodel-turned-pop-singer was enjoying a ‘quiet day’ at home in Paris,” sniffed The Daily Mail.
But even Bruni seems to realize she has been overshadowed by Obama, 45. As she said of Obama last November, “I must say she doesn’t need advice. It would be better for me to get advice from her! . . . She looks like she’s a great, strong, intelligent woman.”
Barf.

This sort of reminds me of about ten years ago when liberal freaks were suggesting that the Williams sisters were just as hot as Anna Kournikova. Then, a non-partisan (but not too bright) sportscaster on Imus compared the Venus and Serena to animals and he lost his job for it. Ten years later, Anna Kournikova is just as hot, and I haven’t heard anybody talk about Serena William’s looks in a long time.
I vote for Carla Bruni! Not Guilty!!!

If I had ever been forced to choose, I would have gone with Venus. Serna looks like she's getting her vitamins from Jose Canseco. She has the back, neck, and shoulders of a man, and a gigantic caboose. Neither has an attractive face, but at least Venus looks like a woman. Great tennis players, though -If you find that sort of thing sexy.

Well - there’s a REASON why Carla was successful as a “predator” - and why Sarkozy was happy to be preyed upon.

You are correct sir. I have the decency not to mention the First Lady's colossal junk in the trunk, but since Chris brought it up, I do have a few observations to share: Michelle's handlers and an obediant press corps are so focused on always putting Michelle in the best light, that they have gone out of the way to make sure she is never photographed from behind. She is also kept away from embarassing photo ops (or the cameras are kept away from her). The only time she has been photographed wearing slacks as FLOTUS was the time she built the vegetabale garden with the school kids. There are no photos of her bending over a shovle. And where as she at the beach when we got to see all of those cheesecake photos of her husband, the candidate? The kids were there.
To be honest, I really don't care what the First Lady looks like. If the President is doing his job, she could look like Hillary Clinton, for all I care. But as long is the press keeps trying distract us from all the mistakes her husband keeps making by fawing over the "New Jackie Kennedy," I have no choice but to call them like I see them. Personally, I don't think Jackie Kennedy was ever all that attractive. But Jackie Kennedy came from money. She was brought up and schooled in how to be ladylike, how to have taste. Michelle Obama can never hope to match that. Just like someone who moved to the United States at her age could never hope to master a perfect American speaking accent. Plus, Michelle Obama says herself that she loves to eat, and she hates to work out. That's OK, but that doesn't jibe with the goddess persona in our culture. She is what she is, and I'm OK with that. I think she is too. It bothers me when liberals start telling me she is what she's not. Remember when Chelsea Clinton was the "New JFK Jr.?"
