*** That was my least favorite thing I ever did in my whole life, Washington writer Hanna Rosin says in a podcast conversation with three pals that accompanies her sure-to-be-controversial new feature, The Case Against Breast Feeding, on The Atlantics Web site.
Shes talking about pumping breast milk the grotesque ritual carried out behind closed office doors nationwide by beleaguered working mothers who are fully committed (as the lactation consultants put it) to the goal of long-term, exclusive breast-feeding. *** Its the moment that kind of brings together all the awfulness of being a modern mother, she says. ***
Why, as a society, have we privileged the magic elixir of maternal milk over actual maternal contact, denying the vast, vast majority of mothers the kind of extended maternity leave that would make them physically present for their babies?
Why do we keep sticking our heads in the sand, putting all the burdens of our half-changed society on women their choices, their priorities, their bodies instead of figuring out reasonable ways to make our new family lives work?
Why do we, as women, accept all the guilt and pressure about breast-feeding that comes our way instead of standing up for what we need in order, in the broadest possible sense, to nourish and sustain ourselves and our families? *** I hope that some day, not too long in the future, books on womens history will feature photos of breast pumps to illustrate what it was like back in the day when mothers were consistently given the shaft. Future generations of female college students will gaze upon the pumps, aghast.
Did you actually use one of those? theyll ask their mothers, in horror.
And the moms, with a shudder, will proudly say no.

We need a law to keep women that don’t want use a breast pump, to not use one.
Newspapers are dropping like flies and the editors can't figure out why. Well, I'm not telling.
Well, on the other side of the issue — “Don’t complain about ‘bare breasts’ in public with babies sucking away on them...” LOL...
I wonder just how much stock she owns in Gerber?
LOL, how true. Could you imagine being a child of a mother who was unwilling to endure a little physical discomfort if it meant you would be healthier? Maybe the law should be broadened to state that any sacrifice and pain required by motherhood should be banned. This is what happens when women have painless deliveries. Here is a shot, to keep you from feeling any discomfort. Now there are some extreme conditions where pain medication is required in labor. If she thinks that’s uncomfortable, wait until they get in middle school.
When breast pumps are outlawed, only outlaws will have breast pumps.
That’s what nannies are for, I doubt she will have much to do with raising her child.
I will never forget calling a wealthy lady from church to tell her we were reorganizing the nurseries and needed volunteers. She informed me that she had “a nanny to care for her children, so why would I want to look after those of others? Her husband called me back very soon after that and offered to write a large check so we could hire extra help to staff the nursery. We had 2 wonderful full time paid workers so hiring extra staff was not the point. We wanted responsible parents in there to keep an eye on things and lend a more personal touch. BTW this couple had 3 children in the nursery on Sunday mornings, a daughter and twin boys.
The theory of some woman seems to be never let children interfere with their real life but I have to ask why have a baby if you aren’t going to mother it?
Uh, because women are the ones who have them? Only a fringe kook could ask such a stupid question.
“Although I’m personally against it, she should consider sterilization.” Just some liberal logic applied to a liberal.
The irony of the fact that many women have to go back to work after having a child because they NEED THE MONEY to survive after paying the exhorbitant taxes voted in by LIBERALS LIKE THIS AUTHOR would be lost on this dumb broad.

I guess there's no point in trying to explain to this self-centered liberal twit that women feed their babies breast milk because it's better for them than some slop out of a can.
You can tell by her writing she has an attitude like a country and western song....'I Wanna Talk About MEEEE'.
And those women go back to work because they consider THEMSELVES not the GOVERNMENT to be responsible, financially and otherwise, for raising the child they brought into the world. Many women would LOVE to stay home but simply cannot afford to, for various reasons.
You have spoken the unspeakable. The prime directive forbids reference to the fact that it has been increased taxes that created the two-income family, i.e. working mothers.
In support of the marxist project to destroy the family, it is forbidden to speak of this. Expect an offical inquiry into your loyalty very soon. That is all.
