The NRA has offered free membership for one year; the offer can be found at
http://www.nrahq.org/nrabonus/
http://www.nrahq.org/nrabonus/
(I do realize that this has been posted several times --- in fact, I have bumped most of those postings several times. I think however that it is worthwhile putting this unique offer back on the "recent article" listing also.)
Gunowners of America: 1-703-321-8585.
The Second Amendment Foundation: 1-425-454-7012.
The biggest advantages to joining the NRA are its size and political clout: it has a very large membership, and it has great influence. It is widely recognized as has having a savvy hand in legislative affairs, and many legislators do fear to cross the NRA.
I am planning on going to the NRA annual meeting in Phoenix 15 May. I have always wanted to attend one.
I decided not to re-join NRA because I think they’re getting too chummy with politicians and have a hidden agenda.
I joined a CCW organization instead.
I’m not an AARP member, because they’re way too liberal for me. I belong to ASA (American Seniors Association), a Conservative seniors organization.
The other great benefit of being an NRA member is the fact that they offer members a program which will replace a stolen gun.
As far as Gun Owners Of America they seem to have a gun grabber mentality I would advise everyone to be very careful with GOA.
Yes, the annual meeting is coming up, and life members have free admittance to the Friday Leadership Forum. However, I believe that tickets for the Forum are first-come, first-serve, so if anyone is planning on going, they should request those tickets now.
Has anyone heard if Governor Palin is coming to the Forum? I received a letter saying that she had been invited, but I haven't seen anything to indicate if she had accepted.
That's not true. Gunowners of America (GOA) is a more reliably pro-gun group than even the NRA -- GOA and JPFO are the only two groups that I am aware of that even mention repealing the 1968 GCA.
You are probably thinking of the fake group, "American Hunters and Shooters Association" (AHSA). AHSA is literally a gun-grabber outfit, founded by HCI types. It was founded back in 2006, and doesn't have even 200 members.
Is this a legitimate offer?
I was at a gun show this afternoon in PA and the person at the NRA booth told me that this offer was a fraud.
I believe that it is; if it isn't, then the NRA web presence has been seriously compromised since it is on a NRA webserver; the whois information for nrahq.org shows:
Administrative Contact : Association of America, National Rifle itadmin@nrahq.org 11250 Waples Mill Road Fairfax, VA 22030 US Phone: 703-267-1514 Fax: 123 123 1234 Technical Contact : National Rifle Association of America jpurtell@nrahq.org 11250 Waples Mill Road Fairfax, VA 22030 US Phone: 703-267-1514 Fax: 123 123 1234 Record expires on 21-Nov-2009 Record created on 08-Sep-2002 Database last updated on 07-Jul-2004
Also, the ploy is elaborate since it also includes the option of paying for 2 years or more of membership at a reduced price; if it were a fake site, that alone would take what might be considered a prank into felony territory.
Finally, the NRA hasn't disclaimed this; from looking around the web, I see where people claim that they have verified this offer with the NRA. I just tried to call 877-NRA-2000 to confirm it myself, but they are closed currently.
Thank you for your immediate reply. I also appreciate your investigative skills. I would not have known how to check this out.
I am a NRA member by the way, but I was interested in the offer so as to pass it along at the shooting range that I frequent.
Thanks again,
JohnG45
There's also a long (3 page) discussion about this offer at the Glock Talk Forum: Join the NRA for free.
Anyone giving money to any organization which has no track record is a fool. The goa has never accomplished anything in their entire history. They turned their backs on the Katrina victims, the residents of Morton Grove, Winnetka, Chicago, San Fransico and Oak Park.
They haven’t done a thing for concealed carry and they were thrown out of the negotiations in Michigan.
They are the only group that asked the Supreme Court for a narrow view in the Heller case.
Thanks for nothing, goa.
goa = AWOL
This is a NRA thread (note the title, and all of the links), and it is one that is trying to let folks know that they can join the NRA for free. It's an organization with great political clout and has a solid record of accomplishment.
There are pro-gun folks, however, who don't agree with one or more stands that the NRA takes or has taken. It's important that we all work together to protect the RKBA, and whether it is with Larry Pratt's GOA or it is with the SAF, or with JPFO, supporting some RKBA group is better than not supporting any of them.
As to GOA's effectiveness, I will say that I have always liked their email alerts. Since the beginning of the year, I have received 30 from the NRA, and 21 from GOA. Both organizations rate candidates and run a political victory fund which puts money on the table for good candidates --- and I generally agree with GOA's ratings for candidates more than I agree with the NRA's. I don't discount the value of timely information and of education, and in my estimation, both GOA and JPFO do a good job with these on various aspects of the RKBA.
Supporting the NRA is in my opinion a more effective way to spend money on the Second Amendment, and I have contributed far more to the NRA than I have to any other Second Amendment organization. But not everyone is going to make the same decision, and I would rather see pro-gun folks support some RKBA group, even if it might not be the most effective way to spend money, than support no RKBA group.
As per your second paragraph about working together, I tried that for about a year. It didn’t work. I finally started to ask the goa members who were trying to get the NRA members to quit and join the goa just what exactly did the goa do in their history. I never get an answer.
We have only four million progun members out of eighty million gunowners. That’s pathetic. I doubt it will help to give free memberships to people. Anyone lazy enough not to spend the pittance to support their rights doesn’t deserve anything free.
We need the same amount of people who are lining up to attend a gunshow to line up at the Republican Headquarters and volunteer. We need the same people who are spending ridiculous amounts for guns and ammo to send a percentage of that money to progun candidates.
We need the same amount of people who mouth off about fighting a Civil War to get a dozen of their friends to support progun candidates.
A person who sits back when the fight is easy won’t make an effort when it’s difficult.
The goa was the only gun group that asked the Supreme Court to take a narrow view which means we have to have 20,000 lawsuits to get rid of those 20,000 gun laws.
The NRA and the SAF have started their lawsuits. They have been successful in getting rid of a number of gun bans including the original Morton Grove, Illinois ban.
The goa is AWOL.
Wrong.
I feel the way to get folks involved is to ask them. That's what this thread is for: asking folks to join the NRA with the best bargain price that I have ever seen.
Maybe only half of the ones that take up this offer will renew next year; maybe just a few. But the NRA has created this program, and I will endeavour to let more people know about it.
I hope that it is a very successful program, and that we can swell our ranks to 5 million or more members.
