Here’s how I see it.

I have horses and they are not pets, even though I love most of them. They have given me countless hours of enjoyment. BUT, they are livestock..they are not pets. I treat them like pets but they are classified as livestock.

Some of our horses are wonderful and will never see the canner. They will be put down by our vet when it is time. No canner for them.

Some have been crippled or sick and have been put down by our vet. No canner for them.

Some have been a nightmare and after countless hours, days, week and months of working with them by professional trainers and me they are still a nightmare. Guess what...they are now dogfood...or foreign steaks. I really don’t care. If they are outlaws and I worry for my kids or my safety, they go to slaughter.
They are livestock, after all.

Flame away.

We live just south of the Canadian border so the canner horses go up there. And, there are lots of canner horses being sold every month around here.

That's what I was trying to say.

Why waste all that meat and incur all the expense of disposing of Mr. Ed's horsey carcass when there are hungry dogs in the world?

For the record, I have ridden, hunted, and coached virtually all of my life. I now maintain four horses here in Germany but I have lost track of the situation in America. What is the law now about disposing of an animal? If I have a horse who founders and I have to put him down what are my options? Can I do it myself or must a veterinarian be summoned? if I have a horse who is no longer fit for work and is in some chronic pain I could send him in the old days to the knacker but evidently that is no longer an option. What must I do with him?

If I must summon a veterinarian what does he cost? What does it cost to dispose of a carcass? Is this why owners are abandoning stock?

This business of sending greenhorns in to inspect animals who literally don't even know which end bites and which and kicks it is the ultimate Kafkaesque unintended consequence of liberals meddling in affairs because they have watched Liz Taylor in National Velvet.

Why can't they simply police slaughterhouses effectively?

I would be grateful for your update.

Would you take one of your problem horses, tie it to a tree, and walk away to let it starve?
