Palin picks Alaska Native (Nelson) to fill Senate seat

JUNEAU, Alaska - Gov. Sarah Palin on Monday made a little known college administrator her second choice to fill a vacant Juneau Senate seat, again bucking Senate Democrats.

The nomination of Joe Nelson, an Alaska Native, is the latest move in a jousting match between Palin, who has the authority to pick the replacement, and the Senate Democrats, who must confirm it.

Democrats in a private meeting last Wednesday rejected Palin's first choice of legislative aide Tim Grussendorf.

When Palin balked, citing legal concerns about their closed door procedure, seven of the nine Democrats signed a letter on Monday urging Palin to send them a new name and to pick it from the list of four candidates forwarded by the local party last week.

But Palin responded by picking Nelson, the director of admissions at the University of Alaska Southeast and the husband of former state Rep. Mary Nelson, a Democrat who represented Bethel.

Joe Nelson, whose name was not on the list forwarded by the party to Palin, did not immediately return phone calls Monday.

He and 12 others applied directly to Palin after she rebuffed the local party's original request that she choose Rep. Beth Kerttula for the seat and sought applications directly from Juneau residents. From that original group, she selected Grussendorf, who was a registered Republican until earlier this year. He blamed that on a registration error.

Sarah has done what many here already suggested. She has picked someone who isn't a lib hack, and who wasn't the Democrat choice and is a Native American which will put the 'rats in a quandry politically if they try to oppose it.

Good move by Governor Palin.

BTW it's typical for the lib ADN to dismiss anyone they oppose, like they belittle Nelson as a "little known college administrator".

Here a part of his actual resumee:

Nelson] has been a member of the Sealaska Board of Directors since 2003. He is chair of the Finance Committee, serves on the Shareholder Relations Committee and is a director of Sealaska Environmental Services, LLC.

[He] is currently director of admissions at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) and is a former director of Preparing Indigenous Teachers and Administrators for Alaska Schools (PITAAS) program. As director of admissions, he is responsible for all of UAS's outreach and recruitment efforts. Born in Mount Edgecumbe, AK, Joe was raised as a commercial fisherman in Yakutat. He is a member of the Teikweidí (Brown Bear) Clan, eagle moiety of the Yakutat Tlingit tribe. After graduating Yakutat High School, Joe attended college in Southern California. He received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from UCLA in 1996 and earned his Master of Arts in American Indian studies in 1998. In 2001, he received a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School.

they belittle Nelson as a "little known college administrator".

After the president they've given us, Democrats have no right to talk about thin credentials ever again.

Part of the qualities of a good leader is do they pick good subordinates? Is this a good subordinate? I do not know since he is and unknown. He may be. It is up to conservatives to check out Nelson with an open mind.

Since she has to pick someone to fill a Democrat seat, who the Democrats have to confirm, we can’t expect a solid Conservative we’d like to see. She is doing great by rejecting all the extreme leftist choices the Democrats put forward and picking twice moderates who aren’t part of the Democrat hack establishment.

You may be right. I do not know if he is a good guy despite being a democrat and maybe more liberal than I like. I can not expext to get a rational explanation of this candidate from the MSM they hate Palin and since she picked this gut , they wil trash him. Good pick or not.

She’s running out the clock on them and making it tough for them to reject HER choices. Masterfully played! I luv it!

She isn’t picking a subordinate, she is picking a Democrat to fill a senate seat as the law requires. Don’t fault her if she can’t find a conservative Democrat to put up. They are more scarce these days than saber-tooth tigers.

Governor Palin has a very strong and creditable record of bipartisanship in most of her major policy and legislative initiatives. Democrats were happy to support her when their ideas were listened to. In this Senate appointment the democrats broke precedent in offering only one name, a name utterly unaccepable to the Governor. In doing this they sought to demean the office of the Governor and to embarrass and humiliate Sarah Palin. Their behaviour was petty and irresponsible and they deserve the smackdown they are getting. Needless to say Axelrod’s trolls at the Anchorage Daily News are in fetid mood. He is obviously not paying them enough. He needs to hire a better class of minion.

Again, Gov. Palin plays chess.

Gov. Palin would also know how to take care of the smug smile of Nazi Pelosi and Harry Reid
