The lesson here is not to take Federal money. As painful as that may be, it’s the only choice they have left.

I agree totally. And I’ll add to that, the churches are not going to be able to exhort the people to live as Christians unless they give up their “tax exemption”.

Problem is the Feds may use the indirect approach, like they did with colleges and Title IX. Even if a school refused Federal money, the Feds claimed enforcement through student loan guarantees. With hospitals, think Medicare money and Federal contributions to states’ medicaid funds.

I totally agree. It’s blood money, and the Catholic hospitals could remain open without it. If they don’t, I would love to see the Catholic bishops take a stand, even if it means they would be arrested. What kind of message would that send to their flock and to America?
