Six Days in Fallujah brings the battle home

Six Days in Fallujah, developed by Atomic Games and set to be published by Konami, takes gamers into the 2004 battle for Fallujah, the largest urban assault since Vietnam. Developers said they're not seeking to exploit the war in Iraq for profit but to use video games, the medium of choice for young people and soldiers alike, to illuminate an important battle. To that end, the game is incorporating recorded interviews and other documentary techniques.

Developers say it's high time a video game aspired to do more than just entertain.

"It's time for video games to do what movies, music and television have done: give people insight into this war that is shaping our world," said Peter Tamte, president of Atomic Games, based in Raleigh, N.C.

...

The game, which will be released sometime next year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Mac, faces an uphill battle, said Michael Zyda, director of the GamePipe Laboratory at the University of Southern California.

Zyda said he expects a game based on an ongoing conflict will struggle for the same reason that early Vietnam War movies flopped: People would rather use entertainment to escape reality, not relive it.

"If you think of the tenor of people, they're sick of the war in Iraq," said Zyda. "Are they interested in playing a game on Iraq? I doubt it."

This game appeals deeply to human nature. If they do a good job it will sell well.

I visited a friend recently who has three teenage boys. Don't know how much history they know, but they sure seemed to know about the weaponry used in various conflicts from playing Call of Duty

My husband and I have 3 sons who were all at Fallujah November 2004. Thank God they all came home alive; albeit one lost an arm and a leg. I can’t help but feel that this game is exploitative, but I guess time will tell. I am sure my current mood has been affected by the 0bama international tour and his deprecation of all Americans, defense of Islam, and general attitude of surrender. Maybe the game will be fine.

One of the Best books I have ever read was No True Glory by Bing West. It’s an account of the Battle of Fallujah. I was very saddened how it was not being made into a movie. Something happen at it lost interest. Harrison Ford was cast to play General Mattis. I would recomend that book in a heart beat.

Also, the video game forums are filled with american kids trashing our marines and hoping that the game lets you play as the insurgents. May those little punks get what they deserve.(Too bad good americans will have to suffer for their ignorance .)

Also there are those kids that will shoot their own team mates on purpose. The NSA should work with the game maker to add secret code that phones home to Santa who plays naughty or nice. This evil detector could prevent another 9/11.

Another account is We Were One. If nothing else, read the excerpts that are found here:

Although I have a copy, I can’t quite bear to read it yet.
