And I was out of power after Hurricane Ike for several days.

I do own a small gasoline powered generator. It didn't cost me $100,000.

Gasoline powered generators may be an option to look into as well. If a person went the gasoline generator route, they would need to ensure that they would always have access to a supply of gasoline. I suppose it depends on what is the most cost efficient in the long term and also by what can be sustained indefinitely if supply lines are cut.
