MUSEUM OF MODERN ART’S EASTER PRESENT:

“THE POPE’S TOILET”

April 8, 2009

Beginning today through April 13, New York City’s Museum of Modern Art is featuring the film, “The Pope’s Toilet.” Shown in Spanish with English subtitles, the movie revolves around a visit by Pope John Paul II to the poor town of Melo, Uruguay, near Brazil. Anticipating the arrival of the pope, townspeople make plans to set up food and drink stands, etc. One of them decides to make money by setting up an outdoor public pay toilet. The film is the work of two Uruguayans: writer Enrique Fernández and cinematographer César Charlone.

Commenting on this is Catholic League president Bill Donohue:

“This movie would not garner our attention except for its venue and timing. It debuted two years ago and it is deliberately being shown during Holy Week, ending on Easter Monday. And it is not being shown at some dump in the Village—it is being showcased at the Museum of Modern Art.

“The New York Times says the film takes ‘an oblique dig at a church that, the movie suggests, may have failed its most disadvantaged followers.’ When it was shown at the Toronto Film Festival two years ago, it was described as blending ‘the sacred and profane.’ Which explains why V.A. Musetto of the New York Post—who has never found a Catholic-bashing movie he didn’t love—gave it three stars.

“The person responsible for all this is Laurence Kardish, senior curator in the Department of Film at the Museum of Modern Art. He didn’t choose this film without deliberation. Indeed, he admits to previewing ‘more films than there are hours in the year’ (when not walking his dogs with a wooden rolling duck in the West Village). And ‘The Pope’s Toilet’ beat out all competitors. Contact Kardish at laurence_kardish@moma.org http://www.catholicleague.org/release.php?id=1591

And ‘The Pope’s Toilet’ beat out all competitors. We checked to see what Muslims were treated to at Ramadan and found that ‘Hollywood on the Hudson: Filmmaking in New York, 1920-39’ was featured then. When Jews celebrated Yom Kippur, a movie about African patriarchy was shown, ‘Delwende.’ Which makes his choice of ‘The Pope’s Toilet’ at Eastertime take on greater meaning.”

Aren't they pathetic? They need a job not a hobby like art.

Apparently, us catholics are fair game. Probably because the left has a BIG guilt complex!

It was hanging around for years and suddenly it’s chosen for Easter weekend. What a hate filled curator and supplemented by our tax dollars. Creep!

I can’t wait to see next years Ramadan gift! HA!

I’m sure they’ll be showing cutting edge films critical of Islam next...

They hate us because we won’t accept their homosexual activity. We say it’s okay then we’d be the greatest. They’re like little kiddies but they’re in powerful positions.

Interesting how the Ramadanian’s are greatly respected despite the persecution homosexuals go through in Mohammadian lands.

Bring back the inquisitions. :)

Ah, the left. Does one ever tire of their selective morality and double-standards?

Imagine the following:

The Brooklyn Museum hosts, during “Gay Pride” week of course, a film titled “Laurence Kardish’s Many Toilets,” a whimsical frolic about a senior curator in the Department of Film at the Museum of Modern Art who walks his dogs with a wooden rolling duck through the West Village by day, but by night stages frequent and often unseemly encounters with strange men in the public toilets of bars across the West Village.

Imagine the howls of indignation. Imagine the weeping chorus crying “homophobia.” Imagine the public protests outside the museum, with numerous politicians in tow, all united in their stand against such blatant displays of discrimination and intolerance.

On the other hand, such a movie just might win a progressive life-style award from the New York Times.

I remember when Turner Classics (NYC) played “The Exorcist” on Christmas morning.
I can still imagine the folks at CNN, HBO and Time Warner laughing their butts off......boy was that funny.

I think they mean 'Happy Easter' with a middle finger salute. It's timing is deliberate, of course. It's venue a little surprising, in that it's not in some dump in the village.

“THE POPE’S TOILET”

Substitute any other religion's leader or prominent person with the word toilet and there would be hell to pay. Time it to a holy season and well!, imagine the outcry. Yet the MOMA thinks they're being incredibly clever and edgy with this one and will no doubt get kudos from the 'right' people. Oh, I guess we just don't 'get' it....

Happy Easter.

As you say, neither do Muslims. But I'm willing to bet this month's mortgage payment that the MOMA won't dare show anything even remotely insulting to Islam. Why? One simple reason: they're cowards. They know the Muzzies will come after them (in more ways than just figurative). Christians will turn the other cheek. So guess who the cowardly bullies pick on?
