I seem to recall a scheme in the ‘70s that involved covering the polar caps with soot in order to stave off the coming ice age.

Complete with graph, scare mongering, and scientific “consensus” that the world would be cooling throughout the century.
At the end of the article it describes the proposed soot spreading over the ice caps.
