SPC just issued a rare “PDS’ tornado watch...they only issue this type of watch when they expect a tornado outbreak with strong tornadoes

GENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 132
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1125 AM CDT FRI APR 10 2009

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

NORTHERN ALABAMA
NORTHWEST GEORGIA
MIDDLE AND PARTS OF EASTERN TENNESSEE

EFFECTIVE THIS FRIDAY MORNING AND EVENING FROM 1125 AM UNTIL 700
PM CDT.

..THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION

DISCUSSION...LINE OF INTENSE SUPERCELLS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO
DEVELOP EWD ACROSS TN VLY AREA AND INTO NRN MIDDLE AND PARTS OF ERN
TN THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. AIRMASS AHEAD OF THIS LINE IS MODESTLY
UNSTABLE WITH MLCAPE VALUES INCREASING TO OVER 1500 J/KG ACROSS THE
TN VLY ATTM. GIVEN LITTLE CONVECTIVE INHIBITION AND MODEST TO STRONG
ASCENT WITHIN/BENEATH LEFT EXIST REGION OF 80KT MID LEVEL JET
STREAK...EXPECT STORMS TO CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN SEVERE INTENSITY
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. OF PARTICULAR CONCERN IS MAGNITUDE OF
VERTICAL SHEAR...ESPECIALLY ACROSS NRN AL/SRN MIDDLE TN THIS
AFTERNOON. FCST HODOGRAPHS IN THIS CORRIDOR SUGGEST HIGH POSSIBILITY
OF A STRONG TORNADO IF DISCRETE CELLS CAN MOVE INTO THIS AREA AS
ANTICIPATED. FARTHER NORTH...ACROSS MIDDLE TN...TORNADO THREAT WILL
ALSO BE ENHANCED NEAR LINE/RETREATING WARM FRONTAL BOUNDARY NEXT FEW
HOURS.

Been through probably 15 quakes here in California, from large to small in scale, never had one bit of damage....

With tornadoes bearing down on your home, there is no escaping damage or total destruction in many cases.

If give a choice between a large tornado coming at our home or business, or a large earthquake, I'll take the earthquake any day of the week.

Best of luck to those in the path of these things.

Just saw some footage on the noon FOX news broadcast, the damage looked pretty bad, where ever it was ... still dark when it was shot, though. Reporting from Atlanta, so I thought it was in that vicinity, but apparently not.

Tornado roars through Arkansas town, kills 3

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas

At least three people were killed and two dozen injured on Thursday night when a tornado smashed through Mena, Arkansas, officials said on Friday.

Mena sounds familiar.

I'd heard about Mena, AR being hit, but didn't realize it had destroyed much of the downtown area. And the mud. splattered all over everything, that was unusual. Very saturated soil or swamps nearby?

Prayers to all in harms way.

Looks like we might be a little south of all the main action down here in Montgomery, but still close enough for a cell to pop up. Gonna be a long afternoon and night, especially for those in Birmingham, Huntsville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, etc

I am just a touch south-west of Knoxville, winds are kicking pretty good right now, will update if anything happens in my neck of the woods (providing I still have power.)

I'd take the tornado. You often get a few minutes of warning, and a tornado does not impact an entire region.

Trying to reach my brother and his family who live in that area. So far, no luck. If anybody hears the specific neighborhoods affected, please post that information.
