N.J. woman slain at Gettysburg College remembered as activist
Star-Ledger ^

Posted on 4/11/2009, 12:53:48 AM by Chet 99

Nurtured from an early age by her activist parents, 19-year-old Emily Silverstein was acutely aware of the troubles of the world and worked to find solutions to issues such as homelessness and women's rights. A sophomore honors student at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, she was poised to take the world by storm, her family said.

But on Thursday morning, Silverstein was found dead in an off-campus apartment. She had been strangled and stabbed to death, allegedly by a former boyfriend, authorities said. ...

From her upbringing, Silverstein was destined to become an activist, Kelly said. Her relatives were anti-war protesters and anti-imperialists, she said. And she was raised in a community specifically chosen by her parents for its activist reputation.

Next week, she would have be one of dozens of students who planned to sleep in tents to draw attention to the plight of the homeless, her aunt said.

Silverstein, an anthropology major at Gettysburg, was a member of Students for a Democratic Society and lived in Peace House, whose main mission is to bring awareness to world peace issues, Kelly said. Co-president of Peace House, Silverstein also worked with Amnesty International and Free the Children.

She studied Arabic in college and planned to study in Morocco in the fall to improve her foreign language skills.

A Silverstein who learned Arabic and wanted to study in Morocco? Interesting.

Your comment expressed so clearly what I feel about these so-called activists. They truly seek attention for themselves not help for those they pretend to have compassion for. Thank you.

She sounds alot like Rachel Corrie. Obama’s mama was an anthropologist...most likely this young lady’s inspiration.

The Lefty press is so sympathetic when “one of theirs” gets hurt or killed...

When cops or soldiers die, they are treated differently.

“She studied Arabic in college and planned to study in Morocco in the fall to improve her foreign language skills.”

Like Dopey-Changey, she revered the Muslim, who attacks every piece of Liberalism she professed to be an advocate of...

It proves the point that Liberalism is suicidal.

They are smart and learn quickly. Arabic Language Scholar is a very popular major for female college students there.

So you want Pakistanis to get high paying jobs as Arabic language translators, instead of Americans? I'm confused.

Alter, you need to reread the thread.

The girl was an anti-American, Fur Shur, and was raised to oppose both war and imperialism, although how you get rid of imperalists without making war on them is a doggone good question.

Still, if she thought learning Arabic would make her some money, I was suggesting she was dumb as a board.

No one makes any money out of learning Arabic, but Pakistani girls who learn it sufficiently well manage to snag rich Arab husbands who take them out of Pakistan.

Consequently there is an oversupply of such folk.

Now, responding to a different question, in general Pakistanis don't speak Arabic, but there are tens of millions of Pakistanis. A small percentage learn Arabic sufficiently well to serve as mullahs, or as potential brides for rich Arabs.

If you're willing to ship off to Iraq, you can make $200,000 a year as a translator for a contractor first year out of college.

Wrong. This kid was raised to be an idiot. Too bad she didn't get a chance to learn from one of what would have been a long series of life's lessons. I doubt her folks will learn a thing, though.

I didn't know SDS was still around. That was the radical New Left group, of which Bill Ayers' Weather Underground was an offshoot. This woman was a Leftist born and bred, like 0bama.

"Activist" is often an MSM euphemism for Leftist agitator. I wonder: What is someone who isn't an activist? An inactivist? A couch potato? A vegetable?

But what kind of retirement does that guarantee? They’ll all need greencards when we pull out.

You're not understanding. The $200k is only available for US Citizens / permanent resident aliens.

So, these young Pakistani ladies are not really asking to be translators in Iraq.

Sounds like this woman was on the fast track to become another “liberal activist”, like Lori Berenson. Remember her? Serving a life sentence in Peru for providing material support to the murderous, Maoist Shining Path guerrillas, for whom butchering innocent people was the way to purify Peru for a Pol Pot style dictatorship.

“(Lori Berenson) is the child of caring, intelligent parents. Both Rhoda and Mark Berenson are college professors of liberal - although not radical - persuasion, who raised their daughter to be a concerned, thoughtful citizen of the world.”

If someone raises their child to embrace evil and tyranny and murder, and call such things “good”, then is it any surprise that they meet such vicious ends themselves?

Were this child not stabbed and strangled, would she have gone forth into the world happy in the knowledge that she was encouraging such a fate for other children?

Perhaps in the final analysis, this was just proactive karma.

“Speaking as a woman, I think she may have served herself (a woman) well by using her right to defend herself and shot that sonofabitch with a firearm center mass until he quit complaining.

“Male hearts all over Freeperdom have quickened over your statement.

Marriage proposals will follow—unless some guy is lucky enough to be your beau already.”

LOL. Love it & that’s why I spend so much time here. Right on!
