So how many dozens of times has this story been posted on FR?
wouldn’t smoking grass clippings be closer to tabacco?
kids have been trying to smoke stuff for ages
Sorry, I did a keyword search and nothing like this came up. Apologies if this is a repost of an old story.
Yep, like corn silk down on the farm.
I did a search and can't find it posted, and I have not seen this story before. Thanks for posting it.
What idiot thought that one up? Of course, those who followed in the idiot’s lead are idiots themselves.
Excerpt:
But doctors warn this is dangerous. Mark Shikowitz, a Long Island ear nose and throat specialist, treated a 9-year-old who had pieces of candy lodged in his nose.
“He told his parents that he felt his nose was burning,” Dr. Shikowitz said.
The candy eventually dissolved, but Shikowitz said kids could also accidentally inhale the fine powder down the wrong pipe.
“That irritation can cause you to cough, can cause you to laryngospasm, which is your voice box spasming and closing,” Shikowitz said.
If the sugar sits in the lungs or in the nasal cavity for a prolonged period of time it could cause an infection.
“Any time you have a substance such as sugar in these areas, which are moist, it creates a terrific growth medium for bacteria,” Shikowitz said.
Experts also worry that this trend could spark interest in real cigarettes or illegal drugs.
The company that manufactures Smarties said it “regrets that a negative message of this type has been sent to young people.”
WHen kids are in self destruct mode there isn’t much you can do about that.
Yeah, I’d keep raisins in the side of my mouth or buy a Dubble Bubble and a jawbreaker to convince my friends I was chewing tobacco (like the big leaguers did)
Sorry but this one doesn’t worry me a great deal. It obviously isn’t good for them but I don’t see an addiction growing out of this. They’ll do it a few times and the novelty will wear off.
Lord knows I probably inhaled plenty of sugar as a kid.
I had never seen this story before, and I log on to FR every day. Thanks for posting it.
It sure is cheaper than tobacco, until Obama finds out and megataxes it to death.
I remember in the olden days, when candy cigarettes were available. Packaged to look like real cigarettes, they were white wintergreen-flavored sticks with a red tip.
I’m glad you posted this. IF it was posted, I missed it.
THANK YOU!
I will spread the word to other parents. I doubt that these kids are doing this but it's best to be on the safe side.
IGNORE idiots that try to stifle information that protects kids.
Have you seen how much smokes cost? Kids are just adapting.
“So how many dozens of times has this story been posted on FR?”
Get a life!
Some posting SHOULD be repeated a few times.
I’m glad he posted it.
This is one I ha not heard before, but it makes sense. Kids are pretty creative, and something like this would seem harmless and not illegal, like drugs.
When I was a kid they used to sell white cigarette-shaped candy sticks with a red tip in a box that looked like Lucky Strikes (a then-big selling cigraette brand). Don’t know how much harm it did.
I had Tonka trucks MADE OUT OF METAL!!!!!!!!!!!
Why oh why did civilization not collapse 40 years ago, when kids had candy cigarettes, drew pictures of guns, straightened out sissy boys on the playground before it became a problem in their life, and engaged in games of competition where the winners felt good and the losers went home crying, but determined to win next time.
The nannies and the ninnies and the government mommies are ruining this great nation.
