Meghan McCain: GOP Should Support Gay Marriage
WNBC-TV ^ | April 13, 2009 | Leanne Ta

Posted on 04/13/2009 12:09:13 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Meghan McCain, daughter of former presidential hopeful John McCain, said she supports gay marriage and lashed out against anti-gay Republicans in her blog on The Daily Beast today.

"People may always have a difference of opinion on certain lifestyles, but championing a position that wants to treat people unequally isn't just un-Republican. At its fundamental core, it's un-American," she wrote.

The mini maverick declared her support for same-sex marriage and urged more Republicans to embrace the gay and lesbian community -- a move she thinks is "vital to the future success of the party."

"Sometimes, gay Republicans are regarded in the same vein as 'Jews for Hitler,' but my father garnered nearly 28 percent of the gay vote in the last election," McCain wrote.

The young blogger warned against conservative rhetoric that often sends an unwelcoming message to gay voters. She also criticized her father's former foe Barack Obama.

"President Obama, for instance, is also against gay marriage -- a dirty little secret many of my gay friends were shocked to discover. But you'd never know it because he always 'sounds' so inclusive," she wrote.

McCain will be speaking about gay rights at the Log Cabin Republicans' national convention this week.

Liberty is great,
but it CANNOT exist without morality.

The founders understood this, and designed the Constitution for a “moral and religious people, inadequate for the governance of any other.”

Meghan McCain should take a long walk off a short pier right after her Daddy. Both are total embarrassments.

Exactly. Mark Levin talks about the social order that must exist in a civil society. Unfortunately, while the Libertarians have great ideas, this is why I can’t support a lot of their agenda - not to mention that its most public face is populated by the one-issue drug legalizers.

I think the term Civil Society is meant to refer to people separate from the government. That is, there’s government, the free market and civil society. While there is no government incentive/law to donate your kidney and no market to sell your kidney, people still do donate kidneys as part of the civil society.

Levin rarely ever talks about social issues. He mentions that he has no problem with government legislating a moral order but he never talks about it specifically.

Great points, thank you.

Also somehow I left out that I meant Mark Levin talks about it in his latest book “Liberty and Tyranny.” You’re right though, he doesn’t get into it often on his radio show, though I enjoy when he talks more about the “cerebral” topics such as the Constitution and our founding. By 6PM, I’ve usually heard enough about Obama’s next effort to destroy our country and heritage.

Yes.
And he’s remarkably consistent on his Libertarian views.
I think I’ve disagreed with him only on the gay “marriage” and adoption issue, on which he did a particular “Bullsh!t” episode.

I also don’t care for his disdain for religion, but like you said, he is definitely consistent. I’ll just say that on the political spectrum, he lines up much more with “us” than “them” :)

“Uh, Meghan, even the majority of AMERICANS don’t support gay marriage.”

And when they do, what are you going to do?

I wish she would shut her trap and quit presuming to speak for anyone else. She is dead wrong on so many issues. I can’t decide whether the MSM is trying to promote her (since she leans liberal in several areas), or if they are baiting her just to see whatnext outlandish thing she will say.

Yes, and we should support abortion, free health care, higher taxes, and amnesty for illegal immigrants. Then we wouldn’t have to deal with that pesky “core principles” issue.

Whatta dim bulb! Does Meghan McCain really believe that homosexuality is merely a "lifestyle issue?"

Doesn't she realize that a core tenet of conservative philosophy is that, because the Constitution was designed to defend the rights of individuals, it has no business with group rights? The Constitution guarantees equal rights to all individual citizens equally, regardless of race, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, etc., etc. Gays are fully entitled to all such protections already. They are not entitled to any additional rights by virtue of their voluntary membership in a particular group.

The question boils down to: Is marriage a "civil right?" It has never been regarded as such in all of American history. Ms. McCain, a question: Why should we regard it as such now? And what could the source of that right be? It wouldn't be found anywhere in the Constitution.

If Ms. McCain nevertheless considers it is such, then she has to explain from whence this "right to marry" comes. It's not in the Constitution, so it can only be a grant of a (constitutionally illegitimate) State. (The State would be constitutionally illegitimate in the very act of granting such a right. The Framers were adament: Human rights are grants of God, not the State.)

Obviously, Ms. McCain is not a conservative. Nor is her father, for that matter. But if what she is saying passes for Republican Party philosophy these days, then I'd have to change my party affiliation to Unenrolled (Independent).

Perhaps Ms. McCain would think that a salutory development. Evidently she is ashamed and embarrassed by conservatives and is happy to throw them under the bus. Perhaps she thinks the GOP will get more political bang for its buck by pandering to the Plethos. (Of which she appears to be a card-carrying member.)

Well, JMHO FWIW.

Thanks for the post, 2ndDivisionVet!

>>>”Sometimes, gay Republicans are regarded in the same vein as ‘Jews for Hitler,’ but my father garnered nearly 28 percent of the gay vote in the last election,” McCain wrote.<<<<

I don’t know this woman, but I already find her distasteful and disgusting. The National Socialists sought the death of the Jews, by torture and cruelty, by government decree. Conservatives simply want people to be left alone to live their own lives - and I’ve never run across any conservative, Republican, or right-winger who has called for any violence or meanness toward any gay person, ever. She’s a sick puppy.
