A faction of gay conservative activists will launch a new group Wednesday to rival the Log Cabin Republicans, the longtime home of the party's gay fringe.
A couple of former Log Cabin staffers broke off to form GOProud, a new political advocacy group, amid complaints the older organization was aligned too closely with liberal gay and lesbian causes and failed to provide an effective voice in Washington for gay Republicans.
Former Log Cabin policy director Jimmy LaSalvia, who will be GOProud's executive director, said LCR local groups continue to do great work at the city and state level, but there is a void at the national level.
"Our country is in transition, our party certainly is in transition, and there is no place at the table at the moment for gay conservatives," Mr. LaSalvia said. "We are seeking to fill that void."
Another founding member of GOProud is Chris Barron, a former Log Cabin political director. He will serve as chairman of the board for the new group, which will be formally introduced at a press conference Wednesday.
The announcement is scheduled to coincide with gay Republicans descending on the District this week for the annual Log Cabin convention.
Log Cabin spokesman Mark Day declined comment on GOProud or on charges that the Log Cabin Republicans are out of step with gay conservatives.
The rift at LCR follows reports in the Washington Blade that the group's chief benefactor is Tim Gill, a wealthy Democratic donor, who critics said influenced decision-making at the organization.

“The notion of forming a political group around a bedroom lifestyle seems totally bizarre”
Not bizarre, perverted.
If true, this could be an improvement.
I mis-read his last name and had a slight EWWWWW moment.
Mr. LaSalvia said: "We are seeking to fill that void."
Second EWWWWWWW moment.
Yep, today is the official launch.
I agree. What’s next, the beastialic or the necrophiliac Republicans? Oh wait, they’re all Democrats...
Wait. I thought the Log Cabin was entirely gay conservatives? Or was it gay GOP which is different... ?
Either way, they are our gay bretheren that Rove/Bush invited into the big tent.
/sarc off
Are they “proud”, or just defensive? No one is advocating throwing the buggerers in jail for their proclivities, why can’t they just deal privately with it, like the SM or necropheliac crowd ?
I've heard they're gonna meet secretly in public restrooms throughout Washington. They even have a secret handshake, of sorts. They identify each other by tapping their feet under the stall dividers.
There bedroom lifestyle seems totally bizarre/perverted.
That they should have a political voice in either party, seems totally bizarre/perverted.
And that they should have a voice in the more conservative of the two, seems totally inappropriate.
“Are they ‘proud’”
That is something that has never made any logical sense to me either. Homosexuals constantly claim that their lifestyle is genetic. So what the heck is there to be “proud” about. Is someone “proud” to have a size 11 foot, or “proud” to have green eyes? The whole concept seems silly.
The question is, will the once-great Republican party succumb to the moral cancer eating it from within? I haven’t given up hope on the GOP yet, but it has to return to its conservative roots. Acting Dimocrat-lite isn’t going to get you conservative OR liberal votes — McCan’t proved that once and for all.
Do they still have ‘tea rooms’?
Guess Meghan McSame has her followers now.
“The notion of forming a political group around a bedroom lifestyle seems totally bizarre... don’t form a group whose membership is formed around sexual deviancy.”
Touche’! He who is not against us is for us (paraphrase of Jesus) so let anyone who wants to, join us, the more the better who see the light to some degree. I’m glad for the votes. These particular people seem to think they have to cloister themselves in their own community. It’s called the gay community! All this dividing up into different “communities” is, I think, just a divide and conquer tactic that’s not good.
That's a good point right there. That's the type of point the GOP should make. Conservative fiscal policy benefits all voters. We may disagree on other issues - and the GOP shouldn't change its position on those issues - but we could attract voters with a sound fiscal policy, without sacrificing other principles.
It's just a matter of looking at the issues from a different angle and presenting the arguments from that angle. There were so many points not made by the GOP in the last presidential campaign. The GOP product is good; but it needs talented salespeople to sell it.
GOProud?
Was GOPenis already taken by Arlen Specter or something?
Funny how most of the groups that have “pride” organizations have very little to be proud of.
There is no such thing as a gay conservative, at least not a gay conservative male. There is an occasional lesbian conservative, but I have yet to see a real example of a conservative fruit. So they can get the hell out of our group yesterday as far as I’m concerned, they are a very negative political force in this country and we need to stop with all the ‘compassion’ for these subversives.
Sorry guys, but if it means teaching our sons that sodomy is anything other than bad for your rectum, you can keep your support.
