A CFA volunteer is the prime suspect for lighting the fire that devastated Marysville, killing 39 people.

The Herald Sun reports sources have revealed a man has been interviewed and released over the Marysville blaze by the Phoenix Taskforce investigating the Black Saturday fires.

The man, who has not been named, was formally interviewed in the weeks after the catastrophe, but has not been charged as investigators gather more evidence.

A police spokesman said the force would not confirm or deny a lead suspect had been identified.

On April 1, Assistant Commissioner Dannye Moloney said police were close to pinning down the culprit for the blaze, confirming the fire was deliberately lit.

Thanks for that info. Even more sad if it was a CFA volunteer.

This has happened a few times. A CFA volunteer lit a fire so that he will be called on to fight it. They get paid for it. Its for the money

Speaking as a Victorian CFA volunteer, we don’t get paid for fighting fires. Arson by volunteers is, unfortunately, not all that uncommon. It tends to come from people who either get a thrill out of fire, or like the comradeship of firefighting.

A lot of the time our regular employers value our volunteering enough to pay us for the time we are at fires, instead of at work - but in essence, we are unpaid.

Thank you

This is what we occasionally get as some sort of formal recognition. For the most part, we do what we do because it has to be done and we do it for each other.

Unfortunately here in California this isn’t uncommon.

We’ve had high level fire officials out starting fires and investigating his own work...

Here people get paid to fight fires. For many there’s an incentive to start a fire...

With the coming summer and our current economic situation, fires could be a popular source of income...

Its for the money.

Not usually.

People set fires because they get a sexual charge out of doing so. It's a pretty thoroughly documented pathology.

Some of these nuts also join volunteer fire depattments or even become professional fire fighters. It's because they're fascinated and obsessed with fire in general and like being around it.

The same thing can be seen by the apparent fact that people who are sexually attracted to children disproportionately enter professional fields where they are around children all the time.

They dont do it for the money, they do it so they can be the first ones on the scene and look like a hero.
