Officials Say U.S. Wiretaps Exceeded Law

The National Security Agency intercepted private e-mail messages and phone calls of Americans in recent months on a scale that went beyond the broad legal limits established by Congress last year, government officials said in recent interviews.

Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in "overcollection" of domestic communications of Americans. They described the practice as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional.

The legal and operational problems surrounding the N.S.A.'s surveillance activities have come under scrutiny from the Obama administration, Congressional intelligence committees and a secret national security court, said the intelligence officials, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because N.S.A. activities are classified. Classified government briefings have been held in recent weeks in response to a brewing controversy that some officials worry could damage the credibility of legitimate intelligence-gathering efforts....

I'm going to hold my breath until I hear the ACLU has filed a suit in Federal Court.

I bet a lot of this NSA over actiity is driven by Homeland Security, and that the increase started shortly after Napolitano took office.

Napolitano must resign. NSA is using the NSA as Bush never did, to spy on Americans who are domestic political opponants of the Obama administration. And Obama is "concerned" about it?He likely ordered it.

We need an investigation into this, and no way should Obama be allowed to paperover it. Freedom is at stake.Obots have invested the internet with eavesdropping deices and phone calls between cnservatives in the USA are being intercepted. The provenece of domestic eavesdropping, where the information goes etc must be investigated. Why should "Ram Manual" be getting intel on Americans, for example, who are not terrorist threats from the Islamofascist sources? America has had its whole security system turned on Americans themselves. This is a travesty. It is fascism.

It violates the constitution that requires warrants for such activity.

I seem to recall a few folks on this very board saying “if you aren’t doing anything wrong why are you worried?” a few years back. Let’s hope we learn if we ever get back in power: no wiretapping without a warrant, no confinement without habeas corpus for anyone other than a POW.

National Security is going to have to choose. Collect communications of Muslim terrorists or collect information on all the “right wing extremists” against Obama’s socialism. Either/or; Obama’s choice.

Thing is ...we are not doing anything wrong...

and yet they are classifying us as a threat of some sort.

How can you classify a the FREE PEOPLE as a threat when no laws have been broken?

It is a rhetorical question...under socialism anything against the community is a crime...under fascism anything against the state...
