I have to admit, if I had the option of hopping on a 200 mph train or sitting around an airport, I’d take the train almost any time — especially if it really was just like getting on a commuter train (with no long waits or security checks).

Hell yes, it would be expensive. But it would be pretty cool.

"I wonder where this high price, I'm sorry, I mean high speed Chu Chu system will be placed."

You are too subtle.

"Is Obama going to make the trains run on time?"

The ends justify the means.

Good point. Socialists just love trains. Every Marxist I’ve ever known is able to go on and on about trains. How we need more of them, how the government must build them everywhere and people be mandated to ride them, how they’ll solve all our problems and people will all have jobs working on trains or fixing them, and everything will be bliss when we get more trains.

Didn’t Hitler get praised for making the trains run on time?

Legend has it, it was Mussolini.

Hitler liked roads and "peoples' cars."

The funding and construction of transportation infrastructure is a legitimate function of government. Examples include the National Road, the Erie Canal, the Transcontinental Railroad, the various Federal Highways, and the entire commercial aviation industry, which has never made a profit independently and which would not exist had it not been for the U.S. Post Office.

I applaud President Obama for this proposal.

“I realize I am in the minority here”

Not really, but these threads descend into manure patties real fast. Not much for discussion.

Maybe they will extend the line from Looooongveeeiw/Marshall to Shreveport. The idea of taking the train half way then finishing the rest of the journey via bus is disgusting. I mean how do get Jameson on the Rocks on a bloody bus! I guess that is why they made flask for such contingencies. But those bastards sure enough will outlaw drink on buses, I just know it!

There is already a private company very far along in the financing for a high speed rail between southern California and Las Vegas, then in comes the government to try and take over; democrats refuse to allow that private sectors can do things better.

Not a prayer, I’m afraid. The high-speed rail corridor as currently planned would run along a route Tulsa -> OKC -> Dallas -> Fort Worth -> Temple, there branching to Houston via BCS; the main line would continue to Austin, thence to San Antonio.

What! We need more East-West and Southeast-Northwest lines. I hate that everything feeds to Chicago. I want to go straight to Denver without having to go to Chicago then bus ride to Springfield, then train to Denver over three days travel! (le sigh)

I also want the trains relatively on time so that one can keep hotel reservations. None of this wanting for hours, because the freight trains are screwing you over on purpose crap.

The Amtrak Heartland Flyer already does that. Well except you have go on to SA before switching over to get to Houston. Why do they always cut out a line between Dallas and Houston? It just doesn’t make since.

High Speed Rail Travel is fantastic. France and Japan are a little larger than the size of Texas. Both countries have cultures that actually use train travel. The US doesn’t. We are very attached to our cars and trucks.

I guess His Barackness will be getting the people who run AmTrack to run it.

I was watching a French movie and what was interesting was the use of small cruise liners to go in between France and England. I was pretty intrigued. They are one nighter trips from I think Le Havre to Portsmouth. Nowadays I am really all about the slower relaxing travel. I will be avoiding air travel as much as possible.
