Mystery deepened on Friday surrounding the breakup of a suspected assassination plot against Bolivian president Evo Morales that left three dead, as opposition leaders cast doubt on the government's story and said it was using the plot to influence coming elections...

An alleged plot against the president and other top officials was broken up by an elite police squad. Three men were killed in their underwear after a half-hour shootout at a hotel...

The dead are believed to be 49-year-old Eduardo Rózsa Flores, Santa Cruz-born son of a Hungarian father and Bolivian mother; Árpád Magyarosi, a Romanian-born Hungarian; and Michael Martin Dwyer, an Irishman...

Rubén Costas, prefect of the department of Santa Cruz, said the police operation may have been a "show" aimed at destabilizing opposition movements...

The killings of the suspects came during a week of strange events. On Wednesday, an explosive device detonated in front of the home of Cardinal Julio Terrazas, a frequent critic of Mr. Morales's government...

One of the men reported to be dead, Mr. Rózsa Flores, is known in Hungary where Web postings list him as the author of books and an activist for a number of causes...

An Eduardo Rózsa Flores page on the Facebook social networking site shows a bearded man smoking a pipe. He lists himself as a fan of the actor Johnny Depp. Friends listed include the Santa Cruz autonomy movement. An Eduardo Rózsa Flores also manages a blog that groups together antiwar, animal defense and other themes...

Index also spoke to the college roommate of the alleged Romanian sniper Mr. Magyarosi, who described him as easy-going and a man with "a big smile." The Web site Hungarian Ambiance said Mr. Magyarosi played guitar and composed music...
