Ammo shortage a concern for area (Read last line)
clarecountyreview ^ | 4/15/2009 | Pat Maurer

The “buying frenzy” started after the election, said Jeff Poet of Jay’s Sporting Goods.

Gun owners are now finding it almost impossible to find automatic pistol cartridges, including semi automatic, 32 ACP, 380 auto, 9 mm and 40 caliber S & W.

Potential legislation suggested by the Obama administration that would reinstate the 1994 ten-year “Brady Bill” limiting ammunition magazines to a maximum of ten rounds, has customers “buying up supplies,” Poet said.

Before his election, President Barack Obama said, “My first priority will be to reinstate the assault weapons bans as soon as I take office. Within 90 days, we will go back after kitchen table dealers and work to end the gun show and internet sales loopholes. In the first year I intend to work with congress on a national no carry law, a one gun a month purchase limit and bans on all semi-automatic guns.”

“We started having a problem getting ammunition around the end of January,” Poet said. He added, “The current shortage is similar to the cycle in 1994 (when the Brady Bill was instituted under President Bill Clinton) when we sold out of high capacity weapons and ammunition.”

*************

Public concern is growing. Walter said “The NRA [National Rifle Association] has signed up more members since January than in all of 2008 and 2007 combined.”

More gun owners is the only way legislation can be stopped.

My local dealer here at Lake of the Ozarks has plenty of .223 when I stopped by last Saturday. I also noticed .40 and .357 on his shelf.

That kinda runs afoul of the “...and bear arms” part of the Second Amendment, doesn’t it? How does he propose to achieve this without such legislation being deemed unconstitutional?

Your constitution is not there merely for decoration. One day, eventually, somebody somewhere in the US is going to need to have the courage to defend the Constitution if it is to remain relevant. It ought to be as easy as asking Obama for his birth certificate please. But it may become as difficult as insisting that the Second Amendment isn’t merely a suggestion, but rather a Force of Nature.

I went to the Bill Goodman Gun Show in Nashville yesterday. There was ammo available from a number of vendors in almost all calibers except for .380. I saw NO .380. One vendor had a 1,000 round case of 9 mm for $300.

Ammo is available but it is expensive.

For ammunition re-loaders, the news on primers is not good. Primers are back-ordered by the millions. Manufacturers of primers, such as Winchester and Federal, are not shipping separate primers right now. They are using every primer they make to manufacture their own loaded factory ammunition.

I bought two boxes of Federal Large Rifle primers last week. They used to sell for about $16 per thousand. I paid $40 per thousand. They were the last boxes available from the retailer. They said they won't be getting any more, perhaps for many months.

It is interesting there are people now buying brand new pistols who cannot find ammunition for their new pistols.

If you go to a gun show to buy a pistol, check to make sure you can buy the ammo before you buy the pistol.

I was to Cabela’s in PA yesterday to buy another gun (KImber Custom II) and was surprised to see that they were out of ammo too (was looking for .380).

Cabela’s usually has it.....it’s expensive, but they usually have it.

I’m new to reloading and firearms in general. I need 40 caliber primers and bullets. I have all the brass I could ever want. Any tips for where to get these components online? I’m expecting a waiting list, I just want a reputable source.

...we have to remember that bobama believes that the Constitution is a “living and breathing document”. To a Marxist, that means “arbitrary and lawless activism”. (page 37, “Liberty and Tyranny” by Mark Levin) Great book btw!

When I was a kid and we all played Cowboys and People-of-Color (Red), my little brother and I always wanted to be a People-of-Color (Red). They could cheat, fight better, and steal horses (bikes). And they got to play with matches to make smoke signals.

Obama won't try. The risk is that the SCOTUS declares such a law unconstitutional AND declares carry permits are the equivalent of driver's licences....meaning your carry permit would be automatically accepted by any state just as your driver's license is accepted by any state.

Obama's legal team will see this as too risky with the current court makeup.

At a large gun shop yesterday in Jacksonville yesterday I noticed a bunch of 223 and 308 available by the case and the prices were not all that much different than six months ago. That was the good news. The bad news was there were 380’s available, HPs only, and the cheapest was $28 for 20 Corbon DPXs plus there was a two box limit. There were 9s, 40s, and 45s by the case but I did not check the price as I needed none. I was buying a 22auto just so I can go shooting without activating my home equity account.

Meanwhile, the internet dealers I use all have sold out and restock dates beyond July for 9s 40s 380s with one listing dates in 2010. On 380s, Midway does not even list a date.

Yowee! And it's not that long ago they were in the $14/box range.

I’m expecting a waiting list,Most online retailers will not backorder primers - there are none available. What's worse is that they have no idea when (if) they will get more - it's that bad.

Individuals stockpiling ammunition are not going to keep America free. Your personal stash makes you feel good — and complacent — but it won’t stop the gradualist dictatorship.
It does make you feel good, though, when you keep on jumping those hoops, obtaining registrations, permits, licenses. Someday you will need a government coupon to flush your #$@*&! toilet, and you will obediently fill out the form for that too.
Meanwhile, buy all the ammo you can. It comes in cardboard, and someday you might need that.

Primers for pistol ammunition are not sold by caliber. You buy either Large Pistol Primers or Small Pistol Primers. The brass is manufactured to accept one of the standard sizes of the two. A .40 S & W caliber cartridge takes a small pistol primer. Do not use either Magnum or Small Rifle primers. They are made for specific purposes other than pistol cartridge loading.

Here is a link for a popular "Rainier" copper plated lead bullet source called Midway Supply. Midway Supply

Good luck finding primers. You'll just have to check around.

Glad some ammo is still available.
Been to two gun shows in the last 6 weeks.
Seems they are aware of folks fear and you save nothing by attending one. but it still is neat to check out all the weapons I’d like to have one of like a Barret.
Course I like .22s cause you can shoot all day for nearly nothing.
I start shooting .45, and .50s adn .30/.30 and it gets expensive real quick.

I have all the brass I could ever want.

The only time I ever had "all the brass I could ever want" was when we went down to Monterrey Marine base (was Navy command pistol team captain at the time, not civillian) and picked up a 55 gallon drum full of spent .223 and .45 hulls, along with ammo cans of clips (not magazines) and clip guides to reload the magazines.
Very little of that left now, (25 years later).
