Ammo shortage a concern for area (Read last line)
clarecountyreview ^ | 4/15/2009 | Pat Maurer

The “buying frenzy” started after the election, said Jeff Poet of Jay’s Sporting Goods.

Gun owners are now finding it almost impossible to find automatic pistol cartridges, including semi automatic, 32 ACP, 380 auto, 9 mm and 40 caliber S & W.

Potential legislation suggested by the Obama administration that would reinstate the 1994 ten-year “Brady Bill” limiting ammunition magazines to a maximum of ten rounds, has customers “buying up supplies,” Poet said.

Before his election, President Barack Obama said, “My first priority will be to reinstate the assault weapons bans as soon as I take office. Within 90 days, we will go back after kitchen table dealers and work to end the gun show and internet sales loopholes. In the first year I intend to work with congress on a national no carry law, a one gun a month purchase limit and bans on all semi-automatic guns.”

“We started having a problem getting ammunition around the end of January,” Poet said. He added, “The current shortage is similar to the cycle in 1994 (when the Brady Bill was instituted under President Bill Clinton) when we sold out of high capacity weapons and ammunition.”

*************

Public concern is growing. Walter said “The NRA [National Rifle Association] has signed up more members since January than in all of 2008 and 2007 combined.”

I looked into taking a shooting class sponsored by a local gun range. To take it you need 800 rounds of .223. The class is expensive on its own, but now you have to tack on an additional $350.00 for the ammo. It can put the class out of most people’s reach.

Don’t think they won’t make some “unfortunate accidents” happen.

As of two minutes ago, Wideners had .400" Sierra jacketed hollow-point bullets in stock.

They may have had others; once I found those I stopped looking.

That depends on what brand primer you use and what type of powder; you really need to buy a reloading manual.

Loadbooks is a good source for books that cover different primer/powder/bullet combinations for just one cartridge.

Stores that carry reloading supplies will typically carry these books.

That kinda runs afoul of the “...and bear arms” part of the Second Amendment, doesn’t it? How does he propose to achieve this without such legislation being deemed unconstitutional?

That's easy. All he needs to do is follow FDR's lead and pack the court. Check and mate, dictator for life Poppa Hussain-O.

There used to be some survilvilist books that you used to see at gun shows about making you own ammo. Not reloading but making the case, the primer, the bullet, the powder the whole nine yards. I know that Israel did this back in 1947 and 1948 when the whole Arab world atacked them and the rest of the world had an arms embargo on them and them alone, just to make it fair. Just goes to show that if you really want to win you can beat all the odds.

What we need is to start having monthly demonstrations like the tea parties. Just everybody agree on a date like the first Saturday or last Sunday of each month and go down to the local county courthouse, city council building or even federal building (a post office will do) and walk around it, setup a pot luck picnic with friends and family, make signs or carry cardboard cutouts of your favorite weapons, have a singalong, make it a swap meet what ever just gather together to interact with your fellow citizens. By doing something like this you will let the elected know that we tax payers are not happy with them. The weekend would be best because most working tax payers are off and have a little bit of free time then.

Has there in fact been a new import ban imposed on ammo ???

or was I simply fed a line to empty my wallet yesterday for the little bit of 7.62x39 that was available in the store ???

and Im simply havin a hard time believing the manufacturers cant keep up with demand...

God help us if we get into a major shootin war with a real adversary...

Don’t think they won’t make some “unfortunate accidents” happen.

If you mean accidents that eliminate justices, I doubt it. I strongly believe Obama will take a page from FDRs playbook and move to expand the court to 15 justices.

The constitution does not specify how many justices must be seated and Obama can argue that the court has not kept up with population growth like the House has. It also will allow for more diversity, etc, etc, etc

Obama would only need a simple majority in the House and Senate to increase the number of justices on the court.

No ban yet... but it is in the legislation that hussein is pushing with mexico to get passed. The shortage is because supply cannot meet demand. Lake City, the US owned and Federal Ammo run ammo plant is on schedule to manufacture over 2.5 billion rounds of ammo this year alone (NRA American Rifleman). Americans are buying hundreds of millions of rounds... I see pallets come into my local Academy Sports and it is all gone within a day, if it is in popular calibers. There is very little in the way of reloading supplies because manufacturers have diverted all of that market to produce their own ammo.

I belong to a MeetUp target shooting group and once in a while we have some single woman who wants to learn to shoot. At least that’s what they claim.

A couple of hundred dollars of ammo later, we never see them again.

I’ll teach a woman to shoot if she has her own gun and ammunition.

well then Im pissed, cause this clerk looked me square in the eye an said that what they had was likely all the euro/commie 7.62 that they would get...'it was banned' was what the owner told him...

this store *usually* has wolf 7.62 layin around on the floor by the pallet, but had zero on saturday...

I ended up buying all the Yugo brass cased that my meager wallet could afford, prolly costing me an opportunity to shop around...

just DAMN...

...manufacture over 2.5 billion rounds of ammo this year alone ...

For perspective, that's 80 rounds per second, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
