WaPo Business Columnist Tells David Gregory Taxes Are Going Up
NewsBusters ^ | April 19, 2009 | Noel Sheppard

As Tea Parties ensued from coast to coast last week, the Obama administration and their media minions depicted attendees as not understanding that the new president has decreed taxes will be going down for 95 percent of Americans.

On Sunday's "Meet the Press," Washington Post business columnist Steven Pearlstein let the cat out of the bag: Tea Partiers are right. Taxes are going up.

This revelation occurred after host David Gregory said to the Post's Pulitzer Prize winner, "There may be doubts about President Obama, but he is cutting taxes."

Pearlstein responded:

That's right. And the level of taxation, overall tax, the federal taxation, which includes the income tax, but also the corporate tax and the excise tax and things like that, it's, it's at one of the lower points it's been in the last 30 years. And one of the things that everyone has to get sort of comfortable with is it's going up. And Dick [Armey] is right about that, it's going up. It has to go up. We need to get the deficit down and we need to live within our means in--as households and as governments. So one of the things I, I think I'm a little disappointed in is that Obama has got himself locked into nobody under $250,000 income is going to get a tax increase.

Gee, taxes going up under Obama. Who would have guessed that he lied when he said 95% of the people would see lower taxes?

Income taxes for the poor may not go up, but certainly excise taxes on cigarettes, energy, travel, alcohol, and other stuff will go way up.

Massive, oppressive taxes will (indirectly) hit EVERYBODY. And just wait until inflation kicks in, as it without a doubt will. And add to that -THERE WON’T BE ANY JOBS.

A real crappy mess is brewing. And with the restless Americans stirring up (via Tea Parties) - I think BO and his gang are worried.

AMERICA AGAIN - 2010

95% of the people are paying lower taxes because 95% of the people are making a lot less money. Good work, Barack!

everyone is going to suffer. If you buy gasoline, electricity, cell phones, anything at the store or have things delivered.

Your prices are going to way up.

You can bet that the poor, women and minorities will be hardest hit

Hubby was visiting a friend of his who has a small market in a bad neighborhood. He overheard a career entitlement recipient say that he was mad because the taxes on cigarettes were going up. His solution is to hijack a cigarette truck. I can only imagine how mad this guy would be if he had to pay for food, rent or mortgage, utilities without subsidies.

Inflation is most assuredly a form of taxation. If you have trillion dollar budget increases, it isn’t the tooth fairy who pays for that.

To get an idea of tax rates under President Zero, look at European sales and VAT rates. Zero wants to build a European style socialist utopia, so we will wind up with French or Swedish tax rates.

National sales tax (VAT) in the 18-22% range combined with income tax rates of 40% for incomes over $50K before Zero is done.

You can’t pay for it by squeezing “the rich” as there are not enough of them and the more you squeeze the worse becomes investment and job creation. These are the folks who have money to invest in new businesses after all and if the government takes 90% of it, there isn’t much left.

Perlstein really believes that Obama is locked into his campaign promises?

Property taxes for both of my houses (in two different areas) were reassessed last month. Sure they're county taxes, but did that have anything to do with Federal government fiscal, monetary and social welfare polices. Heck yes.

Are my mutual/stock holdings being hurt by pending corporate tax increases and government borrowing crowding out? You bet.

Do increased income taxes on those that make more the $250K hurt the chances of my family and I finding work? Darn straight.

Do I have a problem with tax polices based on class envy vs. raising funds in the least damaging means possible for necessary government functions? D@mn skippy I do.

Both parties need to end big spending and big borrowing policies now. Raising taxes is not an acceptable option. Rant mode off.
