In New Jersey, Bills Offering In-State Tuition to Illegal Immigrants Face a Fight

...

A blue-ribbon panel convened by Gov. Jon S. Corzine to study immigration matters unanimously supported the proposal [to allow illegal immigrants in New Jersey to pay in-state college tuition] in a report issued last month, and the governor has also endorsed the idea. Meanwhile, a new, more liberal wind blows in Washington.

But even the most hopeful immigrant advocates in New Jersey concede that these developments may not be enough to push the proposal, which is outlined in several bills, through the State Legislature, particularly during a recession and in a year in which the governor and the entire Assembly faces re-election.

...

Opponents say that the measures could result in illegal immigrants taking college slots from legal residents and would cost the state money that could otherwise be used to benefit citizens.

Christopher J. Christie, the leading Republican challenger to Governor Corzine in this year’s election, called the governor’s support of the measures “astonishing.”

“We need to focus our efforts on providing tax relief for middle-class New Jerseyans,” he said in a statement.

The bills’ supporters acknowledge that this may not be the most opportune political climate in which to push for passage. Anti-immigrant sentiment is high, they say, particularly during a recession that has made many Americans even less tolerant about providing jobs and public education for illegal immigrants.

Moreover, Governor Corzine faces a tough re-election battle, and few think he will expend much political capital on the proposal. Democratic assemblymen may also shy away from the issue to help shore up support among more conservative voters.

Indeed, some legislative offices have been swamped by e-mail messages and phone calls railing against the proposal.

Why would there be illegal immigrants in NJ anyway? Seems like a long haul, except from Canada.

Especially if they use affirmative action rules to fill the spots.

Anti-immigrant sentiment is high.
Nice try to spin the argument. It's not immigration that gets my goat, its the damn illegal-immigration.

Minor correction, I must object to the use 'immigrant' as it does not apply. They are illegal aliens, they have no inention of ever gaining US citizenship.

im⋅mi⋅grant   /ˈɪmɪgrənt/ Pronunciation [im-i-gruhnt] –noun
1. a person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.

These are not 'immigrants' as they are here only long enough to get enough money amassed to move home and live wealthy. They have no loyalty to this country, they do not embrace our culture, language or ethics. They have no desire to see our country propser, they are nothing more than a parasite. They consume, they take what they can get; then they leave, leaving a trail of crime, garbage and contempt all the way back across the border.

It is call the US Chamber of Commerce, admired by the GOP, but would sell America middle class down the river for a small percentage of profit. The faster the GOP dump Wall Street, US Chamber of Commerce, the faster they will regain power.

Illegal aliens break our laws and they are to be rewarded for this? Outrageous. They should be deported. Perks for illegals sends a horrible message to us parents who want our children to respect our laws.
