Reporting from New Delhi -- In a sign of its growing confidence, Sri Lanka on Monday issued an ultimatum calling on Tamil rebels to surrender or perish after the army reportedly breached a major defensive barrier, paving the way for tens of thousands of civilians to make a run for it.
Troops captured an additional square-mile area of the rebels' shrinking terrain Monday, freeing about 19,000 civilians trapped by the fighting, while the navy freed 2,165 people as more fled in other directions, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said.
By some reports, as many as 35,000 noncombatants fled the hotly contested battle zone.
None of the claims could be verified since the Sri Lankan government rarely allows independent media, civic or monitoring groups into the conflict area.
Government forces broke through part of a 7-mile-long barrier built by the rebels as they prepared for their last stand, military officials said. The breach allowed civilians to flee the area.

The civil war has raged for the last quarter century. In recent months, however, largely due to more aggressive tactics and a major increase in its ranks, the army has made significant gains, trapping most Tiger fighters in an area as small as 6.5 square miles on the island's northern coast.
"Militarily, [the Tamil fighters] appear to have lost their major artillery weapons, including 130mm [millimeter] guns and antiaircraft weapons," wrote Col. R. Hariharan, a retired Indian military intelligence official who served in Sri Lanka in the late 1980s, in a recent report. "Thus the security forces have overwhelmed the LTTE, not only physically, but also psychologically."

Your answers seem to implacate all of them.
Well I guess you could use the Muslim example; they know and just look the other way.
Like I said they were in my crews for years.
You don’t have much choice when you live in a North Korean style political system (run by the LTTE in the North/East) and on other side have a brutal Sri Lankan military, which uses tactics not too different from the Russians in Chechnya.
IOW, the Tamils are a helpless bunch, who will get slaughtered whichever way they turn-hope you’ve seen UAV footage of the LTTE shooting fleeing Tamils.
Same here we were in a War zone and under under stress I know who to trust.
Or rather you are extrapolating something very complex from a talking to your crew.

No I did not see that.
No the the news was graphic and the history was very open.in 6 years a lot can be gleaned.
Suit yourself
and don’t forget that the far more Tamils have been killed during the same period-by the LTTE, the military and Sinhalese goons.
Umm, most of the LTTE’s suicide bomb attacks have happened away from Tamil areas-you really need to read up on the specifics.
LTTE bombs Sri Dalada Maligawa Nice one Huh??
Did anyone deny that?
What the hell would denying have to do with that heinous act?
And what exactly is your point??? That the LTTE are a bunch of animals-no one’s denying that.
“And what exactly is your point??? That the LTTE are a bunch of animals-no ones denying that.”
Thank You!
All this while I thought we were talking about the Tamil population and not the LTTE...hmmmmm.
You see no connection??
Ahh yes, I understand, you only see one connection-that since the LTTE are Tamil, the whole community should be thrown all the way to India. Very nice.
Yes good ole Democrat talking points..Have a good day!
