Aiming to stake his claim to the tech-savvy young voters who helped elect President Obama, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, 41, today took to the new media to formally announce he's running for governor - by directly addressing hundreds of thousands of supporters simultaneously via YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
"We can't afford to keep returning to the same old tired ideas and expect the same result," the Democrat told supporters in his three-minute YouTube announcement, part of the unprecedented "virtual fly-around" campaign announcement done entirely in the new media.
The gubernatorial candidate's announcement video, which premiered on his Web page, GavinNewsom.com, utilizes three languages - English, Spanish and Mandarin - as well as images of solar technology, schools and health care facilities. It argued that Newsom - now in his second term as the city's mayor - has created jobs, helped San Francisco establish a rainy day reserve and budgetary "sound fiscal policy," and has tackled the challenge of providing universal health care to the uninsured.
In his announcement, Newsom says his record on issues like environmental and green technology issues, health care and government spending "isn't conservative or progressive. It's just plain smart for everyone."
His advisers hope the unusual new media-based campaign rollout reaches an estimated half-million computer users in the first 24 hours - which would underscore what Newsom has called a "2.0 campaign" for the 2010 Democratic nomination. A key target will be the "millennial" voters, those technology-bred Californians born between 1982 and 2003 - part of the largest and most diverse generation in history - who helped boost Obama to the presidency, his advisers said.

Can he be worse than Arnold? /sarc....my sarcasm is very weak. I think Arnold has ruined the Republican Party in California for at least until after the next governor. It will be AMAZING and a MIRACLE if we get a Republican in there after him. Of course some FREEPERS may have better insite into this and might think a Republican will have a very easy time...I don’t know, but it just seems that Arnold is not doing that great of a job IMHO. Of course this guy is not who we want to be Govenor of Cali...he is mayor of San Francisco after all...NO THANKS!
Let's see... we've had almost forty years of Democrat control of Sacramento, and Newsom (a Democrat) has the audacity to claim he's the fresh new guy to turn things around.
What we need is an evenly balanced legislature. Until we have that, this state is stuck on dumb.
He personally has caused the deaths of American citizens with his endorsement of sanctuary city policies. He used taxpayer money for juvenile camps and plane rides to Mexico.

“Helped”? Okay. But the study I read claimed youth vote only jumped a single percentage point in ‘08, from 17 to 18%. The Youth Vote never matters. All the pundits that point to the internet as significantly contributing to Obama’s success remind me of the idiots in “Wag the Dog” who credit the “Don’t Change Horses Mid-stream” commercials for the president’s success.

Once again we have a public with a very short memory. This is the guy who was found out to have been snorting coke and having an affair with his best freind’s wife while she was working for him in city government. His backing comes from the very monied Getty’s here in the city. If this city had something more than a carnival freak show for a board of supervisors he would have been impeached long ago. His only success is that he has been too ineffectual to do any serious damage to the city. I hope whoever runs against him does a fearless and thorough moral expose of this Clinton wannabe.
