Students and parents are demanding Metro Nashville's public schools stop blocking access to Web sites about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. Advertisement Quantcast

They complained to the American Civil Liberties Union, which on Wednesday gave Metro and Knox County schools an April 29 deadline to announce plans to open access to the non-sexual sites. A letter to the districts threatened lawsuits if they don't comply.

Metro parents previously complained to the school district about the lack of support for gay and lesbian students, the teasing and the fatal results.

Clare Sullivan, a parent of a lesbian daughter who attended Metro schools, cited recent news reports of students who committed suicide after constant harassment for being gay.

"You have students struggling with these issues," she said. "If you cut off avenues for discussion, and it's taboo in schools, where else can they go?"

Sullivan is a member of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, one of the groups whose Web site Metro blocks. Others include the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Metro uses an outside company that filters Internet access, district spokeswoman Noelle Mashburn said.

"Honestly, all I know is that we have a Web site security service and don't know why some are blocked," Mashburn said. "We are not commenting yet on the ACLU letter."

The letter said Metro uses software by Education Networks of America, and the software's default setting blocks sites the company categorizes as "LGBT."

Good grief. Go buy your own Internet access. Schools should have a right to filter Internet access in any way they see fit.

All the Gay web-sites have links to Porno. That’s how those kids got around the firewall at their school library last week. They Googled “Lesbian” and their.

When they sued to show the kids gay websites, I said nothing because I am not gay.

When they sued to show the kids bestiality web sites, I said nothing for I am not a, umm, you know.

When they sued to show the kids pedophile web sites, I said nothing because I am not a pedophile.

Then they sued to show the kids cannibalism web sites. Finally, I'd had enough. So I ate them.

How do they define these as “non sexual” sites?

Is LGBT a nonsexual issue?

It was almost 20 years ago that Metro Nashville guidance counselors (Hillsboro High specifically among others)handed out brochures to troubled teens with the titles “Maybe I’m Gay” and “Maybe I’m a Lesbian”.

Channel Four News gave “One in Teen” favorable coverage even though it advised teens with adult homosexuals. Back in those days WSM was known as “4 the family”.

It is sick now but schools were sick then too.

The UN “Rights of the Child” treaty that is about to be ratified in the Senate will guarantee access to pornography as a “right to information”.

I agree entirely. I personally believe schools should adopt a don’t ask don’t tell policy. Schools are not the place for activism yet that is where the left always focuses on.

Where else can they go? How about home? How about to trusted people instead of websites dedicated to the uttermost confusion?

Amazing, I smoke for ten years, and when I stop watching tv and politics for two weeks, I miraculously am able to put them down for good.

This whole issue is becoming the “thing” for young people these days. They ARE all confused! Most can’t keep a job, most think that unlimited access to a cell phone is a right and most think mom and dad are supposed to foot the bill for their cars and their college. They stay up all night with their eyes glued to “facebook” pages, have no respect for their parents and rarely respect anyone with biblically based convictions.

They look for those who are different and then when they find them, they become confused and in jump the schools to help the kids find themselves. This whole thing fosters confusion and experimentation. It is a mess!

As I’ve posted before: If you send your child to public school, YOU are part of the problem. Stupid, liberal trolls send their kids to public schools. You can talk all day about your conservative credentials, but if you send your kids to public school you’ve voted libtard.

I will defend my local public school! We may be the only ones who actually say Merry Christmas on purpose. Our kids have Christmas break still. The music educators actually openly defend their right to declare Christmas or any other religious holiday. Yes, we have been tested by a few libs who thought the ACLU would defend them, but it did not work!

first the article states that parents and students are saying the schools should have queer sites at school, then it goes on to say Sullivan is a parent of a teenager who thinks they are queer.

They then go on to say they contacted the queer groups etc.

So no, here we have again another homosexual wanting to pus their agenda on to us normal folk and into our schools.

when those who say well Govt has no right to get in the marriage debate, well this is not just about marriage this is about their sick agenda being forced on to our kids and us

does anyone have any contact details for this school so I can contact them and others off here and say we have a child but do not want to give their names for fear of repercussions and I am as a parent against this homosexual sites at school ???????
