Wading into the politically charged immigration debate, a group of colleges and universities is urging Congress to give illegal immigrants tuition aid and a path to citizenship in light of efforts in several states to block them.
The College Board, made up of 5,000 schools and best known for its SAT college admission tests, released a report Tuesday that cites a need for federal legislation that would open up in-state college tuition, financial aid and legal status to many illegal immigrants in the U.S.
Speaking publicly on the issue for the first time, the board is making its push after states in recent years have moved to bar illegal immigrants from paying in-state tuition and, in some cases, enrolling in their public colleges. It also comes as opponents are warning that immigration reform now could reduce already-scarce jobs and college enrollment slots in the ailing economy.
"This is a new area for us, but it was an easy call," said Thomas W. Rudin, a senior vice president for the College Board.
He noted the contradiction in which illegal immigrants who are legally entitled to a K-12 public education suddenly hit barriers when applying to college, even when many are "honor roll students, athletes, class presidents and valedictorians."
"We absolutely believe it's important for opening up economic opportunities," Rudin said.
Under House and Senate bills known as the Dream Act, illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. as children -- defined as age 15 and under -- and have lived here for five years could apply to the Homeland Security Department for conditional legal status after graduating from high school.

I am sure they would.
German and Japanese immigration law makes no apologies for race.
The German government routinely denies citizenship to Turk families that've lived there for several generations if they can't prove all their ancestors entered legally. At the same time they'll welcome a Russian applicant with a German surname that comes from an area colonized by Prussians a thousand years ago.
It's the same in Japan how they bar descendants of Koreans that were forced to move there as slaves. Germany and Japan; those wonderful people who gave us Auschwitz and Nanking and who call Americans "racists".
Can't find 'em to deport them, but we can pay to educate their children.
I see hundreds every day waiting for someone to pick them up for a day's work.
At UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso: there are a great number of students who are Mexican citizens, live in Juárez and pay in-state tuition.
If this logic is true, all Poles are eligible for German Citizenship (And so are all French, Austrians, Belgians, ect, ect)
Ping!
Well then I’m Canadian:
(two kids approaching college age)
WHY? while we turn away our own citizens to fill spots with illegal aliens?
Do not they have colleges in their own country?
Oh they don’t care about their own people.
We just stopped in-state tuition for illegal aliens students bill called SB799 in Arkansas during our 2009 legislature. During the 2005 legislative session, then Governor now Fox News show host Mike Huckabee supported HB1525, that would have given in-state tuition + scholarships to illegal alien students.
